Background of the study
Religious sermons in Efik communities are not only spiritual discourses but also vital channels for cultural transmission. In Calabar, Efik language sermons encapsulate indigenous beliefs, moral values, and historical narratives that are integral to community identity. Pastoral messages are delivered using a blend of formal and colloquial Efik, often enriched with proverbs and cultural references that resonate deeply with congregants (Udo, 2023). This linguistic practice ensures that religious teachings remain relevant and accessible. However, rapid social change and the influence of globalized media have introduced new language forms that sometimes conflict with traditional usage. This study appraises the language use in religious sermons by analyzing recorded sermons, interviewing clergy and congregants, and reviewing scriptural interpretations. The goal is to understand how religious language adapts to contemporary influences while maintaining cultural authenticity, and to identify strategies that reinforce traditional language practices in Efik sermons (Anyanwu, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite their cultural importance, Efik sermons in Calabar are increasingly influenced by modern language trends, which may dilute traditional linguistic and cultural elements (Udo, 2023). This linguistic shift poses a challenge for maintaining the integrity of religious messages and the cultural identity they support. Inconsistent use of language and a lack of standardized sermon guidelines contribute to this problem.
