Background of the study
Religious narratives have long served as both repositories of cultural heritage and vehicles for moral instruction within Igbo communities. In Enugu, these narratives—ranging from parables and miracle stories to liturgical recitations—significantly influence everyday language practices. Over time, the repeated oral transmission of sacred stories has shaped idiomatic expressions, proverbs, and even syntax in Igbo. These narratives are not static; they evolve with shifts in religious belief and social practice, impacting how the language is used in both formal and informal settings (Eze, 2023). Moreover, as modern communication mediums emerge, religious narratives continue to adapt, integrating digital formats while retaining their traditional influence. The interplay between religious storytelling and language practice provides an invaluable lens through which to understand the dynamics of cultural preservation and change. This study investigates how religious narratives inform linguistic conventions, enrich vocabulary, and influence speech patterns among Igbo speakers in Enugu. It draws on ethnographic fieldwork, analysis of recorded sermons, and interviews with community leaders to map these influences, while also considering how globalization and modernity challenge traditional language norms (Okafor, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the deep-rooted influence of religious narratives on Igbo language practices, rapid modernization and media globalization are altering these traditional influences. Some community members report a dilution of culturally embedded expressions in everyday language (Eze, 2023). The challenge lies in how religious narratives, traditionally a cornerstone of linguistic identity, are adapting—or failing to adapt—to modern communication contexts. This disconnect raises concerns about the long‐term preservation of Igbo linguistic heritage in Enugu.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine how religious narratives shape everyday Igbo language practices.
  2. To identify shifts in language use due to modern influences.
  3. To propose strategies for preserving cultural expressions in modern contexts.

Research questions:

  1. How do religious narratives influence Igbo language practices in Enugu?
  2. What modern factors are altering these traditional influences?
  3. What measures can help preserve cultural expressions?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it bridges the gap between traditional religious discourse and modern language practices, offering insights for cultural preservation and educational programming. Findings will benefit language policymakers, educators, and cultural custodians aiming to maintain Igbo heritage (Eze, 2023; Okafor, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to Igbo language practices in Enugu influenced by religious narratives; excludes other regions and genres.

Definitions of terms:

  • Religious narratives: Traditional stories conveying spiritual and moral lessons.
  • Language practices: Patterns and styles of everyday language use.
  • Igbo language: The indigenous language of the Igbo people.
