Background of the study
Political discourse significantly shapes language use, particularly among leaders who must convey complex ideas to diverse audiences. In Ibadan, Yoruba leaders engage in political communication that blends formal rhetoric with colloquial expressions to resonate with constituents (Akinola, 2023). Their language use not only reflects policy positions but also influences cultural identity and public perception. The strategic choice of words, idioms, and tonal variations in political speeches can reinforce traditional values or introduce new linguistic trends. However, the influence of political discourse on language use raises questions about the preservation of classical Yoruba forms and the potential homogenization of language in pursuit of mass appeal (Oluwole, 2024). This study investigates how political discourse among Yoruba leaders in Ibadan impacts language use, examining speeches, public statements, and media interviews. It aims to identify patterns and shifts in language that result from political influence and to evaluate the broader cultural implications of these changes.

Statement of the problem
Political discourse among Yoruba leaders in Ibadan has led to noticeable shifts in language use, sometimes diluting traditional linguistic forms. The strategic use of modern terminologies and colloquial expressions, while effective for mass communication, may erode classical Yoruba linguistic heritage (Akinola, 2023). This study seeks to explore the extent of these changes and their implications on cultural identity.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess how political discourse influences language use.
  2. To identify linguistic shifts among Yoruba leaders.
  3. To evaluate cultural implications of these changes.

Research questions:

  1. How does political discourse shape language use among Yoruba leaders?
  2. What specific linguistic shifts occur?
  3. What are the cultural impacts of these changes?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the interplay between political discourse and language use, offering insights into how Yoruba leaders influence linguistic trends. The findings will inform language policy and cultural preservation efforts in Ibadan (Akinola, 2023; Oluwole, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to Yoruba political discourse in Ibadan; other regions are not included.

Definitions of terms:

  • Political discourse: Communication related to political ideologies and policies.
  • Language use: The manner in which language is employed in speech.
  • Yoruba leaders: Political figures representing Yoruba communities.
