Background of the study
Cultural events are vital in preserving and celebrating the rich heritage of the Efik community. Accurate interpretations at these events are crucial for conveying cultural narratives, traditional practices, and artistic expressions. Translator expertise—marked by linguistic proficiency, cultural insight, and subject-specific knowledge—plays a significant role in ensuring that Efik interpretations faithfully reflect the intended cultural messages (Udo, 2023). Professional interpreters who are well-trained in both the language and the cultural context can bridge communication gaps between performers, organizers, and audiences, thereby enhancing the overall experience of the event. However, variations in translator expertise often lead to inconsistent interpretations, risking the dilution of cultural authenticity (Anyanwu, 2024). This study assesses how translator expertise influences the quality of Efik language interpretations in cultural events by examining performance metrics, gathering feedback from event participants, and interviewing professional interpreters. The goal is to identify key competencies that contribute to high-quality interpretations and to propose recommendations for further professional development.
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized importance of translator expertise, Efik interpretations at cultural events sometimes fail to capture the full spectrum of cultural nuances, resulting in inconsistent quality (Udo, 2023). Variations in training and experience among interpreters lead to misinterpretations that can distort cultural messages, affecting the authenticity of the event (Anyanwu, 2024).
