Background of the study
Cultural events are vital in preserving and celebrating the rich heritage of the Efik community. Accurate interpretations at these events are crucial for conveying cultural narratives, traditional practices, and artistic expressions. Translator expertise—marked by linguistic proficiency, cultural insight, and subject-specific knowledge—plays a significant role in ensuring that Efik interpretations faithfully reflect the intended cultural messages (Udo, 2023). Professional interpreters who are well-trained in both the language and the cultural context can bridge communication gaps between performers, organizers, and audiences, thereby enhancing the overall experience of the event. However, variations in translator expertise often lead to inconsistent interpretations, risking the dilution of cultural authenticity (Anyanwu, 2024). This study assesses how translator expertise influences the quality of Efik language interpretations in cultural events by examining performance metrics, gathering feedback from event participants, and interviewing professional interpreters. The goal is to identify key competencies that contribute to high-quality interpretations and to propose recommendations for further professional development.

Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized importance of translator expertise, Efik interpretations at cultural events sometimes fail to capture the full spectrum of cultural nuances, resulting in inconsistent quality (Udo, 2023). Variations in training and experience among interpreters lead to misinterpretations that can distort cultural messages, affecting the authenticity of the event (Anyanwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of translator expertise on interpretation quality.
  2. To identify challenges in current interpreter performance.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving translator training.

Research questions:

  1. How does translator expertise affect interpretation quality?
  2. What challenges do interpreters face at cultural events?
  3. What measures can enhance interpreter performance?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the role of translator expertise in ensuring accurate Efik interpretations during cultural events, thereby preserving cultural heritage and enhancing event quality. The findings will inform interpreter training programs and cultural institutions (Udo, 2023; Anyanwu, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to Efik interpretations at cultural events; does not include other communication settings.

Definitions of terms:

  • Translator expertise: Advanced skill and cultural knowledge in translation.
  • Cultural events: Gatherings that celebrate cultural heritage.
  • Efik language: The language of the Efik people.
