Background of the study
Accurate translation of academic research is vital for knowledge dissemination, and in the context of Igbo, cultural nuances play a significant role in ensuring the integrity of the original work. Igbo language contains rich idiomatic expressions and cultural references that, if not properly translated, can lead to significant misinterpretations in scholarly texts (Eze, 2023). Academic translations must preserve both technical content and the underlying cultural context, yet challenges often arise when translators opt for literal renditions that overlook subtleties. This study investigates how cultural nuances affect translation accuracy in Igbo academic research by analyzing translated scholarly articles and conducting interviews with experienced translators. The aim is to identify key areas where cultural misinterpretation occurs and propose methodologies that integrate cultural competence into the translation process. Through this, the study hopes to enhance the overall quality and credibility of Igbo academic literature.
Statement of the problem
Despite efforts to translate academic research into Igbo, inaccuracies persist due to the insufficient incorporation of cultural nuances. Literal translation methods frequently fail to convey idiomatic and contextual subtleties, leading to distorted academic outputs (Eze, 2023).
