Background of the study
Digital translation tools are transforming communication on social networking sites by facilitating real-time language conversion. Nigerian Pidgin, with its informal and adaptive nature, is widely used online to connect diverse audiences (Adamu, 2023). These digital tools, including automated translation software and mobile apps, are designed to process and translate content rapidly. However, their effectiveness is often limited by the challenges of capturing colloquial expressions, idiomatic language, and cultural context inherent in Nigerian Pidgin (Ibrahim, 2024). This study appraises the performance of digital translation tools by analyzing social media posts, evaluating error rates, and collecting user feedback. Through a mixed-methods approach, the research aims to identify both strengths and weaknesses of these technologies and to provide recommendations for enhancing their accuracy and cultural sensitivity in online communication.

Statement of the problem
Digital translation tools for Nigerian Pidgin frequently produce errors due to the language's fluid and idiomatic nature (Adamu, 2023). Inaccuracies in translating slang and cultural references can lead to miscommunication and user dissatisfaction, undermining effective online engagement.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the performance of digital translation tools for Nigerian Pidgin.
  2. To identify common translation errors.
  3. To propose recommendations for tool improvement.

Research questions:

  1. How effective are current digital tools in translating Nigerian Pidgin?
  2. What errors commonly occur?
  3. What enhancements can be made?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores digital translation efficacy, guiding improvements that will enhance online communication in Nigerian Pidgin and support cross-cultural interactions (Adamu, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Focuses on digital translation tools used on social networking sites; offline contexts are excluded.

Definitions of terms:

  • Digital translation tools: Software that automates language conversion.
  • Social networking sites: Online platforms for social interaction.
  • Nigerian Pidgin: A widely spoken Nigerian creole.
