Background of the study
Effective communication in healthcare is critical for accurate diagnosis, treatment, and patient satisfaction. In regions where Efik is the primary language, interpreters serve as a bridge between healthcare professionals and patients. Interpreter expertise—encompassing linguistic proficiency, cultural sensitivity, and familiarity with medical terminology—is essential to ensure that health information is conveyed accurately (Udo, 2023). In healthcare settings, misinterpretation can lead to serious consequences, including misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment. Professional training and continuous development of interpreters are therefore paramount. This study investigates the impact of interpreter expertise on Efik language communication in healthcare contexts by examining interpreter performance, analyzing patient outcomes, and gathering feedback from healthcare providers. The research aims to assess how specialized training influences communication accuracy and to identify key areas where interpreter expertise contributes to improved patient care (Anyanwu, 2024). By understanding these dynamics, the study seeks to inform policies that enhance interpreter training and ultimately improve healthcare delivery in Efik-speaking communities.

Statement of the problem
In healthcare settings, the lack of sufficient interpreter expertise in Efik language communication can result in critical miscommunications between healthcare providers and patients (Udo, 2023). Inadequate training and limited knowledge of medical terminology among interpreters have been identified as key factors that compromise the accuracy of interpreted messages (Anyanwu, 2024). These challenges lead to potential errors in diagnosis and treatment, adversely affecting patient outcomes. This study seeks to identify the specific impact of interpreter expertise on healthcare communication and to propose strategies for enhancing interpreter training to ensure improved accuracy and patient care.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the role of interpreter expertise in Efik healthcare communication.
  2. To identify challenges related to interpreter training in medical contexts.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing interpreter performance.

Research questions:

  1. How does interpreter expertise affect communication in healthcare settings?
  2. What are the challenges in current interpreter training for medical contexts?
  3. What measures can improve interpreter proficiency in healthcare?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates the impact of interpreter expertise on Efik language communication in healthcare, contributing to improved patient outcomes and healthcare quality. The insights will benefit hospitals, interpreter training programs, and policymakers by highlighting areas for targeted intervention (Udo, 2023; Anyanwu, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to interpreter-mediated communication in Efik healthcare settings and does not extend to other languages or sectors.

Definitions of terms:

  • Interpreter expertise: The level of proficiency and specialized training in translation.
  • Healthcare settings: Environments where medical services are provided.
  • Efik language: The indigenous language of the Efik people.
