Background of the study
Multimodal translation integrates multiple forms of communication—text, images, audio, and video—to convey information effectively. In Nigerian Pidgin educational videos, this approach is increasingly employed to enhance learning by combining spoken language with visual and textual elements. Nigerian Pidgin, with its vibrant and dynamic nature, is widely used in informal education, yet translating educational content into this creole language poses unique challenges (Adamu, 2023). Translators must ensure that linguistic content, instructional graphics, and accompanying audio align seamlessly to deliver clear, coherent messages. However, discrepancies between visual cues and verbal translations, as well as issues with timing and synchronization, can lead to misunderstandings and reduced educational efficacy (Ibrahim, 2024). This study investigates the challenges associated with multimodal translation in Nigerian Pidgin educational videos by analyzing case studies, conducting interviews with educators and translators, and assessing viewer feedback. The goal is to identify best practices that overcome these challenges while maintaining both linguistic accuracy and visual coherence.
Statement of the problem
Despite the advantages of multimodal translation, Nigerian Pidgin educational videos often experience challenges such as synchronization errors, misalignment between audio and visuals, and inconsistencies in linguistic style (Adamu, 2023). These issues can confuse learners and diminish the overall effectiveness of educational content (Ibrahim, 2024). This study seeks to identify and address these multimodal challenges, with the aim of proposing strategies that enhance the integration of multiple communication modes in Nigerian Pidgin educational videos.
