Background of the study
Digital media has transformed how languages are translated and disseminated, particularly for languages like Igbo, which face challenges of standardization and accessibility. Technological interventions, such as computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, machine translation engines, and real-time speech recognition systems, have been integrated into translation workflows to enhance efficiency and consistency (Okafor, 2023). In Igbo translation, these technologies aim to expedite the conversion of content across digital platforms, including websites, social media, and multimedia applications. However, while these tools can streamline workflows, they also raise concerns about accuracy, cultural fidelity, and the loss of nuanced expression. This study appraises the impact of technological interventions on Igbo translation workflows in digital media by analyzing case studies, surveying professional translators, and reviewing performance metrics. The goal is to determine whether these technologies improve productivity and quality, and to identify areas where human expertise remains indispensable (Ike, 2024). The study further explores the integration of technology with traditional translation practices to provide a balanced approach that preserves the linguistic and cultural integrity of Igbo.

Statement of the problem
Despite the promise of technological interventions, Igbo translation workflows in digital media often suffer from issues such as inaccuracies, contextual errors, and insufficient cultural adaptation (Okafor, 2023). Automated tools may produce literal translations that fail to capture the subtleties of the Igbo language, while a lack of proper training in these systems exacerbates errors (Ike, 2024). This study seeks to identify the specific challenges in current digital translation workflows and assess the impact of technological interventions on translation quality, with the aim of proposing improvements that balance technology with human oversight.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the effectiveness of technological tools in Igbo translation workflows.
  2. To identify challenges related to accuracy and cultural fidelity.
  3. To recommend strategies for integrating technology with human expertise.

Research questions:

  1. How do digital tools impact Igbo translation in digital media?
  2. What challenges arise from their use?
  3. What improvements can enhance overall translation quality?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates the role of technological interventions in Igbo translation workflows, offering insights for translators and digital media professionals. Enhanced integration of technology will improve translation accuracy and efficiency, ultimately promoting the wider dissemination of Igbo content (Okafor, 2023; Ike, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the evaluation of technological interventions in Igbo translation workflows in digital media and does not cover offline translation practices.

Definitions of terms:

  • Technological interventions: Digital tools and systems used to assist in translation.
  • Translation workflow: The process and methods employed to translate content.
  • Igbo language: The indigenous language of the Igbo people.
