Background of the study
Social media is a dynamic environment where language evolves rapidly to meet the demands of diverse audiences. Nigerian Pidgin, known for its flexibility and expressive quality, is widely used in online communications to engage various demographic groups. Cultural adaptation in translation involves modifying content to resonate with local cultural norms while maintaining the original message’s intent. In the context of social media, this means adjusting slang, idioms, and cultural references so that they are relevant and appealing to Nigerian audiences (Adamu, 2023). However, the balance between preserving the core message and adapting to local nuances is delicate. Over-adaptation may dilute the original content, while under-adaptation risks alienating the target audience (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines how cultural adaptation strategies are applied in the translation of social media content into Nigerian Pidgin. By analyzing social media posts, conducting surveys with digital content consumers, and interviewing translators, the research seeks to identify best practices that enhance engagement and comprehension while respecting cultural identity.
Statement of the problem
Despite the popularity of Nigerian Pidgin in social media, translation efforts often fall short in adequately adapting cultural nuances. Inconsistent cultural adaptation can result in messages that are either too literal or overly modified, thus failing to connect with the intended audience (Adamu, 2023). This challenge leads to miscommunication and reduced engagement. The study seeks to explore these shortcomings and understand how current practices can be improved to ensure that social media content translated into Nigerian Pidgin retains both its original meaning and cultural resonance (Ibrahim, 2024).

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the impact of cultural adaptation on Nigerian Pidgin translations in social media. The findings will guide translators and digital marketers in developing content that is both accurate and culturally resonant, thereby improving audience engagement and communication effectiveness (Adamu, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).
