Background of the study
Hausa news content is pivotal in keeping the public informed and engaged in Kano, where Hausa is widely spoken. Translating news content accurately requires handling technical terminology, idiomatic expressions, and cultural references that are unique to the region (Bello, 2023). The translation process must balance speed with accuracy, particularly in the fast-paced environment of news production. Challenges arise when automated translation tools are used without sufficient human oversight, leading to literal translations that may misrepresent nuanced news narratives (Garba, 2024). Moreover, inconsistent translation standards and varying levels of translator expertise contribute to discrepancies in the quality of translated news content. This study evaluates the challenges encountered in translating Hausa news content in Kano by analyzing news broadcasts, print media, and online articles. It includes feedback from professional translators and news editors to pinpoint common errors and propose improvements that enhance overall translation accuracy and consistency.
Statement of the problem
Despite advancements in translation technology, Hausa news content in Kano frequently suffers from translation errors that compromise the accuracy and clarity of information (Bello, 2023). Issues such as literal translations, misinterpretation of idioms, and inconsistent use of technical vocabulary can distort the intended message and misinform audiences (Garba, 2024). This study seeks to identify these challenges and assess their impact on news dissemination, aiming to propose standardized approaches that ensure reliable and contextually accurate translations.
