Background of the Study
Phonological features such as intonation play a critical role in shaping meaning and conveying emotion in spoken language. In Nigeria, indigenous speech exhibits a wide range of phonological characteristics influenced by regional and cultural factors. This study conducts a comparative analysis of Yoruba and Igbo intonation patterns, exploring how these features contribute to linguistic identity and communicative effectiveness (Nwankwo, 2023). Yoruba intonation is often characterized by melodic pitch variations that add expressive depth to conversation, while Igbo intonation displays distinctive stress patterns that mark semantic nuances. By analyzing recordings from native speakers in various contexts, the research seeks to identify similarities and differences in intonation between the two languages. The study also examines how these phonological patterns interact with other linguistic features to enhance message clarity and emotional impact. The findings are expected to contribute to the understanding of indigenous phonological systems and support initiatives aimed at preserving linguistic diversity in Nigeria (Olatunde, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although phonological features are essential for effective communication, there is limited comparative research on intonation patterns in Nigerian indigenous languages, particularly between Yoruba and Igbo. Existing studies often address these languages separately without exploring their similarities and differences. This gap hinders our understanding of how intonation contributes to linguistic identity and communication effectiveness in multicultural settings. Without systematic analysis, efforts to preserve indigenous phonological features may be undermined. Addressing this issue is critical for developing language preservation strategies and enhancing the teaching of indigenous languages (Nwankwo, 2023; Olatunde, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing intonation in Yoruba and Igbo speech and does not extend to other indigenous languages.
