Background of the study
The translation of international literature into Yoruba plays a pivotal role in making global narratives accessible to Yoruba speakers while preserving the cultural and literary essence of the original texts. Accurate translation is essential to ensure that stylistic elements, idiomatic expressions, and cultural nuances are maintained. Translators must navigate challenges such as adapting metaphors, preserving literary tone, and ensuring that the translated text resonates with the target audience (Adeleke, 2023). The process requires a delicate balance between literal fidelity and creative adaptation to maintain both the meaning and the artistic integrity of the original work. This study evaluates the translation accuracy of Yoruba language versions of international literature by analyzing a range of translated texts, comparing them with the source material, and gathering feedback from literary critics and readers (Oluwole, 2024). The research employs both qualitative and quantitative methods to assess translation fidelity and to identify common errors or shortcomings. By doing so, it aims to propose guidelines and best practices that can enhance translation quality, thereby promoting greater cross-cultural literary exchange and preserving the richness of Yoruba literary expression.

Statement of the problem
Translating international literature into Yoruba often encounters issues related to accuracy and cultural adaptation. Literal translations may fail to capture the stylistic and contextual nuances of the original texts, resulting in a loss of literary quality (Oluwole, 2024). Inconsistencies in translation approaches and the absence of standardized guidelines contribute to variations in the final output, which can mislead readers and diminish the text’s cultural impact (Adeleke, 2023). This study seeks to identify these challenges and to evaluate how current translation practices affect the fidelity of Yoruba literary translations.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the accuracy of Yoruba translations of international literature.
  2. To identify challenges in preserving stylistic and cultural elements.
  3. To propose guidelines for enhancing translation fidelity.

Research questions:

  1. How accurate are Yoruba translations of international literary works?
  2. What challenges hinder the preservation of literary nuances?
  3. What strategies can improve translation accuracy?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates the translation accuracy of Yoruba versions of international literature, offering insights that benefit translators, scholars, and cultural institutions. By identifying challenges and proposing best practices, the research will enhance cross-cultural literary exchange and preserve the artistic integrity of translated works, thereby enriching the Yoruba literary landscape (Adeleke, 2023; Oluwole, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating translation accuracy in Yoruba versions of international literature and does not extend to non-literary texts or other languages.

Definitions of terms:

  • Translation accuracy: The degree to which a translation preserves the original meaning and style.
  • International literature: Literary works produced in various global languages.
  • Yoruba language: The indigenous language of the Yoruba people.
