Background of the Study
News headlines serve as the gateway to information, and their semantic coherence is critical for ensuring that messages are clearly and effectively communicated. In Nigeria, regional news reporting varies due to cultural, linguistic, and editorial differences. This study evaluates the semantic coherence of news headlines across different regions, comparing how lexical choices, syntactic structures, and discourse markers contribute to overall clarity. By analyzing headlines from various regional news outlets, the research investigates whether semantic coherence is maintained consistently or if regional variations lead to differences in public understanding (Okoro, 2023). The study examines how factors such as local language influence and journalistic style affect the meaning conveyed in headlines. The findings will provide valuable insights into best practices for headline writing, aiming to enhance the clarity and reliability of news reporting in a diverse media environment (Afolabi, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although effective news headlines are essential for clear communication, there is limited research on the semantic coherence of headlines in Nigerian regional news reporting. Existing studies tend to focus on content analysis rather than the linguistic features that contribute to clarity. Variations in semantic coherence can result in public misinterpretation and hinder the effectiveness of news dissemination. This gap in research restricts efforts to standardize headline writing practices and ensure that important information is conveyed consistently across regions. Addressing this issue is crucial for improving the quality of journalism and enhancing audience trust in news media (Okoro, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate semantic coherence in Nigerian news headlines.

  2. To compare headline construction across different regions.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing semantic clarity in news reporting.

Research Questions

  1. What are the key factors affecting semantic coherence in news headlines?

  2. How do regional differences impact headline meaning?

  3. What improvements can be made to standardize headline clarity?

Significance of the Study
This study contributes to a better understanding of the linguistic factors that shape effective news communication. The findings will aid journalists, editors, and media regulators in developing guidelines to ensure semantic coherence, thereby improving public comprehension and trust in regional news (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing news headlines from Nigerian regional media and does not consider other news formats.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Semantic Coherence: The clarity and consistency of meaning in a text.

  2. News Headlines: The title or summary of news articles.

  3. Regional Reporting: Journalism that focuses on local or regional issues.
