Background of the study
Radio remains a critical medium for disseminating information and culture, particularly in regions like Calabar where Efik is the predominant language. Multimodal interpretation in radio broadcasts goes beyond mere verbal translation; it incorporates tonal modulation, sound effects, and culturally specific auditory cues to enhance the delivery of messages. In Efik language radio programs, interpreters employ these multimodal techniques to bridge the gap between spoken content and the cultural context of listeners (Udo, 2023). Such techniques are vital in conveying complex news, educational content, and entertainment in a manner that is both engaging and comprehensible. However, challenges arise when interpreters struggle to maintain consistency in tone and timing, potentially leading to misinterpretations. This study assesses the effectiveness of multimodal interpretation practices in Efik language radio broadcasts by analyzing broadcast recordings, interviewing interpreters, and surveying audience feedback. The aim is to determine how well current practices convey both literal and contextual meanings and to recommend improvements that could further enhance broadcast clarity and cultural resonance (Anyanwu, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the benefits of multimodal interpretation, Efik radio broadcasts in Calabar sometimes suffer from inconsistencies in integrating verbal cues with auditory elements. Variations in tone, pacing, and cultural signaling can lead to miscommunication and reduced listener engagement (Udo, 2023). Inadequate training in multimodal techniques further exacerbates these issues, resulting in variable broadcast quality. This study seeks to identify these challenges and evaluate their impact on the overall effectiveness of Efik language radio interpretation, proposing strategies to standardize and enhance multimodal communication (Anyanwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate current multimodal interpretation practices in Efik radio broadcasts.
  2. To identify challenges in integrating verbal and auditory cues.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving interpretation quality.

Research questions:

  1. How are multimodal techniques applied in Efik radio interpretation?
  2. What challenges hinder effective integration of these techniques?
  3. What improvements can enhance broadcast clarity and cultural resonance?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it assesses multimodal interpretation practices in Efik radio broadcasts, providing insights for broadcasters and interpreter trainers to enhance communication quality. Improved multimodal techniques will lead to clearer, more culturally resonant radio programming that better serves the local community (Udo, 2023; Anyanwu, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to Efik language radio broadcasts in Calabar and does not extend to other media forms.

Definitions of terms:

  • Multimodal interpretation: The integration of verbal and non-verbal elements to enhance communication.
  • Radio broadcasts: Programs transmitted via radio channels.
  • Efik language: The indigenous language of the Efik people in Calabar.
