Background of the Study
Hashtags have emerged as a powerful linguistic tool in digital communication, serving to categorize content and foster online communities. In Nigeria, the formation of hashtags represents a notable example of morphological adaptation, as users creatively blend words, abbreviations, and symbols to form new lexical items (Obiora, 2023). This study investigates the morphological processes underlying hashtag formation in Nigerian digital communication. It examines how morphological strategies such as compounding, clipping, and blending are employed to generate hashtags that capture cultural trends and political sentiments. The research will analyze a corpus of hashtags from social media platforms to identify patterns and assess their role in enhancing message clarity and digital engagement. The findings will provide insights into the dynamic nature of language evolution in the digital age, demonstrating how users adapt traditional morphological rules to suit new communication technologies (Obiora, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread use of hashtags in Nigerian digital communication, there is limited research on the morphological adaptations involved in their creation. Existing studies tend to focus on the functional aspects of hashtags without a detailed examination of the word formation processes behind them. This gap hinders our understanding of how digital media influences language evolution and creativity. Without systematic analysis, the linguistic mechanisms that drive hashtag formation remain poorly understood, which may limit efforts to harness digital trends for effective communication. This study addresses these issues by analyzing the morphological features of hashtags in Nigerian online discourse (Obiora, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify morphological processes used in hashtag formation.

  2. To analyze the structure and innovation in Nigerian hashtags.

  3. To assess the communicative impact of these morphological adaptations.

Research Questions

  1. What morphological strategies underlie Nigerian hashtag formation?

  2. How do these strategies contribute to effective digital communication?

  3. What trends can be identified in hashtag evolution?

Significance of the Study
This study provides essential insights into digital language evolution by examining morphological adaptation in hashtag formation. The findings will benefit linguists, digital media analysts, and marketers by clarifying how language adapts to online communication (Obiora, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the analysis of hashtag formation in Nigerian digital communication and does not include other digital language phenomena.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Morphological Adaptation: Modification of word formation processes to suit new contexts.

  2. Hashtag: A keyword or phrase preceded by a hash (#) used to index content on social media.

  3. Digital Communication: Exchange of information via digital platforms.
