Background of the study
Access to community services, such as healthcare, legal aid, and social welfare, is essential for effective community development. In Calabar, the Efik language is pivotal in ensuring that community members fully understand the services available to them. Professional interpreters serve as crucial mediators, translating and interpreting information between service providers and community members who speak Efik. This study examines the role of interpreters in facilitating Efik language access in community services, emphasizing how their work impacts service delivery and community empowerment (Udo, 2023). Interpreters in these settings must navigate diverse terminologies and complex service protocols while maintaining cultural sensitivity and clarity (Etim, 2024). The study draws on interviews with interpreters, service providers, and community members, as well as observations of interpreter-mediated interactions, to evaluate the effectiveness of current practices. It also considers challenges such as interpreter shortages, lack of standardized training, and resource limitations that affect service accessibility. By highlighting both successes and challenges, the research aims to propose measures to improve interpreter services and enhance community engagement in Calabar.
Statement of the problem
Despite the crucial role of interpreters in facilitating Efik language access, community services in Calabar continue to face challenges that undermine effective communication. Inadequate interpreter training, inconsistent service delivery, and resource constraints often result in misunderstandings and limited access to essential services (Udo, 2023). These challenges not only impede the provision of quality community services but also contribute to social exclusion among Efik-speaking populations (Etim, 2024). This study seeks to identify the key obstacles in interpreter-mediated communication and to develop strategies that enhance the reliability and efficiency of interpreter services in community settings.
