Background of the study
Cultural adaptation is a critical aspect of translating literary works, especially in languages rich in idiomatic expressions and cultural symbolism like Igbo. Translators must not only convert text from one language to another but also adapt cultural references to resonate with the target audience. In Igbo literature, this involves the careful rendering of proverbs, folklore, and traditional narratives in a manner that preserves the original’s cultural essence (Chukwu, 2023). The study evaluates how cultural adaptation techniques are employed in Igbo translations of literary works, focusing on both classical and contemporary texts. It examines the balance between literal translation and creative adaptation, investigating the strategies translators use to overcome challenges such as cultural mismatches and lexical gaps (Okafor, 2024). By analyzing translated texts and interviewing literary translators, the research aims to assess the effectiveness of cultural adaptation methods and offer recommendations for improving translation practices while preserving the intrinsic cultural value of Igbo literature.

Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized importance of cultural adaptation in literary translation, Igbo translations often suffer from inadequate handling of cultural nuances. Overly literal translations may fail to capture the rich symbolism and idiomatic expressions inherent in Igbo texts, while overly creative adaptations risk distorting the original meaning (Chukwu, 2023). This inconsistency leads to translations that may not fully convey the cultural and literary depth of the source material (Okafor, 2024). The study seeks to identify the primary challenges in cultural adaptation during the translation process and to propose methodologies that balance fidelity to the original text with effective cultural conveyance.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate current cultural adaptation strategies in Igbo literary translation.
  2. To identify challenges in balancing literal and creative translation.
  3. To recommend best practices for improved cultural fidelity.

Research questions:

  1. How are cultural adaptation strategies implemented in Igbo literary translation?
  2. What challenges arise in preserving cultural nuances?
  3. What improvements can be made to enhance cultural adaptation in translations?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines cultural adaptation in Igbo literary translation, offering insights into how best to preserve cultural meaning while ensuring readability. The findings will benefit translators, literary scholars, and cultural institutions by identifying effective strategies to maintain the integrity of Igbo literary works (Chukwu, 2023; Okafor, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating cultural adaptation in Igbo literary translations. It does not address translation practices in other genres or languages.

Definitions of terms:

  • Cultural adaptation: The process of modifying cultural references to suit the target audience.
  • Literary translation: The translation of written works such as novels, poems, and stories.
  • Igbo language: The indigenous language of the Igbo people.
