Background of the study
Code-switching, the practice of alternating between languages or dialects within a single discourse, is a prevalent phenomenon in digital content creation. In Yoruba digital media, content creators often switch between Yoruba and English to enhance relatability and to convey nuanced meanings. This study examines how code-switching influences the quality of translations in digital texts, focusing on social media posts, blogs, and online news platforms. Although code-switching can enrich communication by incorporating diverse linguistic elements, it also poses challenges for translators who must maintain coherence and cultural relevance in their work (Akinola, 2023). The study investigates whether the strategic use of code-switching aids in preserving the intended meaning or if it leads to inconsistencies and misinterpretations during translation (Oluwole, 2024). By analyzing digital content samples and interviewing translators and content creators, this research aims to understand the impact of code-switching on translation quality and to propose guidelines that help maintain a balance between linguistic creativity and clarity.
Statement of the problem
Despite the creative potential of code-switching in digital content, its impact on translation quality remains contentious. Translators often struggle to accurately render content that intermixes Yoruba and English, resulting in potential loss of nuance and coherence (Akinola, 2023). The inconsistent use of code-switching can lead to translations that confuse readers and dilute the cultural authenticity of the original message (Oluwole, 2024). This study seeks to identify the challenges posed by code-switching in Yoruba digital content and assess its overall effect on translation quality, with the aim of developing best practices for maintaining clarity and cultural integrity.
