Background of the study
Interpreting in legal proceedings is a specialized field that demands precision, cultural sensitivity, and an in-depth understanding of legal terminologies. In Onitsha, Igbo community legal proceedings rely heavily on interpreters to facilitate communication between legal authorities and indigenous speakers. However, interpreting challenges such as the misinterpretation of legal jargon, cultural nuances, and rapid exchanges often undermine the integrity of legal outcomes (Eze, 2023). These challenges are compounded by the complex structure of community legal systems, where traditional norms intersect with formal judicial procedures. Interpreters are frequently required to translate not only the words but also the underlying legal concepts, which may have no direct equivalent in the Igbo language (Nwachukwu, 2024). This study investigates the specific challenges encountered by interpreters in these settings and examines how such issues affect the fairness and accuracy of legal proceedings. Through interviews with legal practitioners, interpreters, and community members, as well as analyses of recorded legal sessions, the research aims to highlight the critical role of effective interpretation in ensuring justice and upholding the rule of law within Igbo community legal contexts (Eze, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite its importance, interpreting in Igbo community legal proceedings in Onitsha faces significant challenges. Inaccuracies in the translation of legal terms and cultural nuances have led to misunderstandings that compromise the fairness of legal outcomes (Eze, 2023). Interpreters often lack specialized training in legal terminology and procedural protocols, which exacerbates errors and delays in the legal process (Nwachukwu, 2024). These issues not only affect the credibility of the legal system but also disadvantage defendants and other participants who rely on precise communication. This study aims to identify and analyze the primary challenges of legal interpreting in Onitsha and propose strategies for improving interpreter performance.
