Background of the Study
Political oratory is a powerful tool for persuasion, and its effectiveness is closely linked to the morphosyntactic features employed in public speeches. In Nigeria, political leaders use public speeches to articulate policies, mobilize support, and assert authority. This study evaluates the morphosyntactic elements present in Nigerian public speeches, focusing on political oratory in Abuja. Features such as verb tense, clause structure, and word formation patterns play a crucial role in shaping message clarity and impact (Ibrahim, 2023). The study will analyze a corpus of political speeches to identify recurring morphosyntactic patterns and assess how these elements contribute to message coherence and persuasion. Variations in morphosyntactic choices can affect public interpretation and potentially influence voter behavior and political legitimacy. By examining these features in detail, the research aims to provide insights into the strategies used by politicians to craft compelling narratives that resonate with diverse audiences (Chukwu, 2024). The findings are expected to inform political communication practices and enhance our understanding of the relationship between language structure and political influence.

Statement of the Problem
There is a dearth of systematic research on the morphosyntactic features employed in Nigerian public speeches, particularly in the context of political oratory in Abuja. While political speeches are widely analyzed for their rhetorical content, the specific morphosyntactic strategies that underpin effective communication remain underexplored. This gap restricts our understanding of how linguistic structures influence public perception and political outcomes. Misinterpretations arising from complex or ambiguous morphosyntax can undermine message clarity and voter engagement. This study seeks to address these issues by analyzing the morphosyntactic elements in Nigerian political speeches, offering evidence-based recommendations to improve communication effectiveness (Ibrahim, 2023; Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify key morphosyntactic features in Nigerian public speeches.

  2. To assess their impact on message clarity and persuasion.

  3. To propose strategies for improving political oratory.

Research Questions

  1. What morphosyntactic features characterize Nigerian political speeches in Abuja?

  2. How do these features influence public comprehension?

  3. What improvements can enhance the effectiveness of political oratory?

Significance of the Study
This study offers significant insights into the morphosyntactic aspects of Nigerian political communication. Its findings will benefit political strategists, linguists, and policymakers by clarifying how language structure impacts voter engagement and political influence. The research contributes to developing more effective communication strategies in public speeches (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing morphosyntactic features in Nigerian public speeches delivered in Abuja and does not extend to other forms of political communication.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Morphosyntax: The combination of morphological and syntactic features in language.

  2. Public Speeches: Formal addresses delivered by public figures.

  3. Political Oratory: Persuasive public speaking used in political contexts.
