Background of the Study
Digital storytelling on platforms like YouTube has emerged as a transformative medium, reshaping semantic expression and language evolution in Nigeria. This study investigates how Nigerian YouTube content creators utilize digital storytelling to induce semantic shifts in their narratives. By blending traditional storytelling techniques with modern multimedia elements, creators generate innovative language forms and evolving meanings (Umar, 2023). Digital storytelling often involves creative lexical choices, neologisms, and hybrid expressions that resonate with global audiences while preserving local identity. The study will analyze a corpus of YouTube videos, focusing on lexical selection, narrative structures, and contextual cues that signal semantic change. These shifts not only mirror technological influences but also reflect broader sociocultural transformations. The research aims to document the extent of semantic innovation driven by digital storytelling and assess its implications for language evolution in the digital era (Umar, 2023; Eze, 2024). Findings are expected to provide insights into the role of digital media in shaping contemporary Nigerian semantics and inform strategies for effective digital communication.

Statement of the Problem
Although digital storytelling is recognized as a catalyst for semantic change, there is limited empirical research on its specific impact within the Nigerian context. Existing studies have largely focused on traditional media and formal language use, neglecting the dynamic semantic shifts occurring on digital platforms like YouTube. This gap hinders our understanding of how content creators influence language evolution through innovative narrative techniques. Without systematic analysis of semantic shifts in digital storytelling, it is difficult to gauge the broader impact on contemporary language practices and cultural identity. This study addresses these deficiencies by examining semantic changes in Nigerian YouTube content, providing a framework for understanding digital-induced language evolution (Umar, 2023; Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze semantic shifts in Nigerian YouTube digital storytelling.

  2. To document innovative narrative techniques used by content creators.

  3. To assess the impact of these semantic changes on language evolution.

Research Questions

  1. What semantic shifts are evident in Nigerian digital storytelling on YouTube?

  2. How do content creators employ innovative narrative techniques?

  3. What are the broader implications of these shifts for contemporary Nigerian semantics?

Significance of the Study
This study provides valuable insights into the transformative role of digital storytelling in shaping Nigerian semantic expression. The findings will benefit digital media scholars, linguists, and content creators by elucidating how innovative narrative strategies drive language evolution. Enhanced understanding of digital-induced semantic shifts will inform more effective communication practices in the digital era (Umar, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing semantic shifts in Nigerian YouTube digital storytelling and does not extend to other digital platforms.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Digital Storytelling: The use of digital media to craft and share narratives.

  2. Semantic Shifts: Changes in the meaning of words and phrases over time.

  3. Content Creators: Individuals who produce and share digital media content.
