Background of the Study
Radio debates in Nigeria represent a vibrant arena for public discourse, where phonetic enunciation plays a critical role in conveying persuasive messages. This study examines the public speaking techniques employed during Nigerian radio debates, focusing on phonetic clarity, articulation, and enunciation. Effective public speaking relies heavily on precise phonetic delivery, as clear enunciation can significantly enhance audience engagement and message comprehension (Akinola, 2023). In the dynamic environment of radio debates, speakers must articulate their thoughts swiftly and accurately, often under time constraints and in the presence of competing sound elements. The study analyzes recorded debates to identify common phonetic features, such as intonation patterns, stress placement, and speech rhythm. These features not only contribute to the persuasive power of the speaker but also serve to establish credibility and authority. Recent research suggests that refined enunciation is a key determinant of success in public speaking and debate formats (Bello, 2024). By investigating the phonetic strategies used in radio debates, this research aims to provide insights that can improve public speaking techniques and contribute to more effective communication in broadcast media. The study’s findings are expected to inform training programs for radio personalities and enhance the overall quality of debate discourse (Akinola, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of phonetic enunciation in effective public speaking, there is limited research focusing specifically on its role in Nigerian radio debates. Existing studies have addressed aspects of public speaking and rhetoric, yet few have examined the phonetic dimensions that underlie clear enunciation. This gap is significant because poor enunciation can lead to misunderstandings and diminish the impact of debate arguments. Moreover, without a clear analysis of the phonetic strategies employed, radio presenters may not fully capitalize on techniques that enhance persuasive communication. This study seeks to address these issues by analyzing the phonetic components of public speaking in radio debates, thus offering evidence-based recommendations for improving enunciation and overall communicative effectiveness (Bello, 2024; Akinola, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To identify key phonetic features used in Nigerian radio debates.
To assess the impact of phonetic enunciation on audience comprehension.
To propose improvements for public speaking techniques in radio settings.
Research Questions
What phonetic features characterize effective enunciation in radio debates?
How does clear enunciation affect audience engagement?
What strategies can enhance phonetic delivery in public speaking?
Significance of the Study
This study offers important insights into the role of phonetic enunciation in effective public speaking within radio debates. The findings will benefit radio hosts, public speakers, and communication trainers by highlighting techniques that enhance clarity and persuasion. Improved enunciation will contribute to more impactful debates and better-informed audiences (Akinola, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing phonetic enunciation in Nigerian radio debates and does not extend to other forms of public speaking.
