Background of the Study
Digital platforms have transformed the way language is used, fostering the emergence of new morphological patterns. In Nigeria, the influence of digital communication is evident in both blog posts and SMS language. Blog posts often exhibit creative morphological derivations, such as the blending of words and the use of novel affixes, to express complex ideas in a flexible and engaging manner. Conversely, SMS language tends to favor brevity, resulting in morphological simplifications and the omission of standard inflectional markers (Adeyemi, 2023). This study examines how digital platforms affect morphological structures, comparing the innovative tendencies observed in blogs with the more constrained forms used in SMS. The research investigates whether the medium influences the extent of morphological creativity and how these changes impact readability and communication effectiveness. By analyzing corpora from both platforms, this study will provide insights into the broader implications of digital communication on language evolution in Nigeria (Ifeoma, 2024). The findings are expected to contribute to our understanding of how technology drives linguistic change and inform educational and communication strategies in the digital age.
Statement of the Problem
There is limited empirical research on how digital platforms influence morphological changes in Nigerian language use. Although both blogs and SMS are popular, they exhibit distinct morphological patterns that have not been thoroughly compared. This gap hinders our understanding of the role of digital media in promoting linguistic innovation versus linguistic economy. The divergence in morphological practices between lengthy blog posts and concise SMS messages raises questions about the factors driving these differences. Without a systematic analysis, educators and communication specialists may find it challenging to adapt teaching and media strategies to the evolving digital language landscape (Ifeoma, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To compare morphological patterns in Nigerian blog posts and SMS language.
To assess the impact of digital platforms on morphological innovation.
To provide recommendations for language education in digital contexts.
Research Questions
What morphological differences exist between blog posts and SMS language?
How do digital platforms influence morphological changes?
What are the implications for communication effectiveness?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant for understanding the transformative effects of digital platforms on language morphology. Its findings will inform educators, linguists, and media practitioners about evolving language trends, supporting the development of adaptive communication and teaching strategies that reflect digital realities (Adeyemi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing morphological patterns in Nigerian blog posts and SMS language, excluding other digital media.
