Background of the study
Community-led language planning has become a vital strategy for preserving indigenous languages, especially in contexts where official policies may be insufficient. In the case of the Tiv language, grassroots initiatives have emerged as crucial mechanisms for preserving linguistic heritage. These initiatives encompass local language workshops, cultural festivals, and community-based educational programs, all of which aim to promote the use and transmission of Tiv among younger generations (Okoro, 2023). Such efforts are typically driven by local stakeholders, including cultural leaders, educators, and community organizations, who work collaboratively to counter the effects of globalization and the dominance of major languages (Chukwu, 2024). The study explores the role of these community-led initiatives in maintaining the vibrancy of the Tiv language. By examining success stories and challenges through policy documents, community interviews, and field observations, the research provides a comprehensive appraisal of how these initiatives contribute to language preservation. It also identifies key factors that enable or hinder sustainability, offering insights into how similar strategies might be successfully implemented in other indigenous contexts (Nwosu, 2023; Okoro, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the active role of community-led initiatives in Tiv language preservation, significant challenges persist. Limited funding, a lack of formal institutional support, and the encroachment of dominant languages have undermined the sustainability of these grassroots efforts (Chukwu, 2024). There is often a disconnect between community aspirations and available resources, resulting in fragmented initiatives that struggle to achieve long-term impact (Okoro, 2023). This study seeks to identify the critical barriers faced by community-led language planning for Tiv and to assess the effectiveness of these initiatives in sustaining language use. Addressing these issues is essential for developing strategies that can bolster community efforts and ensure the continued vitality of the Tiv language (Nwosu, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To appraise community-led language planning initiatives for Tiv language preservation.
  2. To identify challenges faced by these initiatives.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing the sustainability of community-led efforts.

Research questions:

  1. What community-led initiatives are being implemented for Tiv language preservation?
  2. What challenges do these initiatives face?
  3. How can the sustainability of community-led language planning be improved?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the crucial role of community-led initiatives in preserving the Tiv language. The findings will inform policymakers, community leaders, and educators about effective strategies and challenges associated with grassroots language planning. By evaluating these initiatives, the research offers practical recommendations to enhance the sustainability of Tiv language preservation efforts (Okoro, 2023; Chukwu, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the appraisal of community-led language planning initiatives for Tiv language preservation. It focuses exclusively on grassroots efforts and does not address government-led language policies.

Definitions of terms:

  • Community-led: Initiatives driven by local groups or stakeholders.
  • Language planning: The process of developing strategies for language preservation and promotion.
  • Tiv language: The indigenous language of the Tiv people, integral to their cultural identity.
