Background of the Study
News reporting in Nigeria plays a critical role in shaping public perception and informing citizens. This study investigates the semantic consistency in Nigerian news reporting by comparing television and print media. Semantic consistency refers to the uniformity of meaning conveyed through language, which is essential for maintaining credibility and clarity in news delivery. Television news anchors and print journalists often adopt different stylistic and linguistic approaches, yet both aim to present coherent and accurate information. This research examines how semantic consistency is maintained across these platforms despite differences in medium, audience expectations, and production constraints (Okoro, 2023). By analyzing a corpus of news reports, the study will document patterns of lexical choice, phrasing, and discourse markers that contribute to semantic uniformity. Moreover, the research will explore how deviations from semantic consistency may lead to misinterpretations or public distrust. In a rapidly evolving media landscape, ensuring consistent semantic messaging is vital for effective journalism and democratic accountability (Uche, 2024). This study thus aims to bridge the gap between media studies and linguistics, offering insights that can inform newsroom practices and policy frameworks for media regulation (Okoro, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
There is limited comparative research on the semantic consistency of news reporting across different media platforms in Nigeria. While television and print media each have unique stylistic conventions, discrepancies in semantic delivery may lead to varied audience interpretations. The absence of systematic analysis on semantic consistency hampers efforts to standardize news reporting practices and ensure uniformity in public communication. Without a clear understanding of the factors that influence semantic consistency, media organizations may inadvertently contribute to misinformation or biased reporting. This study seeks to address this gap by analyzing the linguistic strategies used in television and print news reports to assess their impact on semantic uniformity (Uche, 2024; Okoro, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate semantic consistency in television and print news reports.

  2. To compare linguistic strategies used across these media.

  3. To recommend measures to enhance semantic uniformity.

Research Questions

  1. How is semantic consistency maintained in Nigerian news reporting?

  2. What differences exist between television and print media in this regard?

  3. How can media organizations improve semantic uniformity?

Significance of the Study
This study offers important insights into the linguistic underpinnings of effective news reporting. By comparing television and print media, it provides practical recommendations for ensuring semantic consistency, thereby enhancing the reliability of news dissemination. The findings will benefit media practitioners, regulatory bodies, and academic researchers in their efforts to improve journalistic standards (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing semantic consistency in Nigerian television and print news reports and does not cover other media platforms.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Semantic Consistency: The uniformity of meaning in language use.

  2. News Reporting: The process of gathering and presenting information through media.

  3. Media Platforms: Channels through which news is disseminated.
