Background of the Study
Social media has emerged as a transformative force in shaping language use, particularly in informal digital discourse. This study examines the effect of social media engagement on Nigerian morphosyntactic patterns, focusing on online debates. In this digital arena, users often experiment with language, leading to innovative morphosyntactic constructions that deviate from standard forms. Nigerian online debates, characterized by rapid exchanges and interactive discourse, provide a fertile ground for observing how morphosyntactic patterns evolve in real time (Eze, 2023). Participants may blend elements from indigenous languages and Nigerian English, resulting in unique syntactic and morphological innovations. This investigation analyzes textual data from various online debate forums to identify recurring patterns, such as novel word orders, affix usage, and syntactic simplifications. Previous research has noted that high levels of engagement on social media platforms can accelerate language change by promoting linguistic creativity and adaptability (Ibrahim, 2024). By assessing these changes, the study aims to understand the broader implications of digital communication on traditional morphosyntactic structures. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory and offer practical insights into how digital interactions are reshaping language norms in Nigeria (Eze, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although social media has a pronounced influence on language evolution, there is limited research specifically addressing its impact on Nigerian morphosyntactic patterns during online debates. Existing literature often focuses on lexical innovations without examining how syntactic and morphological structures are altered by digital engagement. This gap in research makes it difficult to understand the extent to which online interactions drive changes in traditional language forms. In the context of online debates, the rapid exchange of ideas may lead to oversimplified or hybrid morphosyntactic constructions that diverge from standard usage. This study seeks to fill this gap by providing a detailed analysis of morphosyntactic changes influenced by social media engagement, thereby offering insights into the evolving nature of Nigerian language in digital spaces (Eze, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian online debates.

  2. To identify the influence of social media engagement on these patterns.

  3. To evaluate the implications of these changes for standard language use.

Research Questions

  1. What morphosyntactic patterns are evident in Nigerian online debates?

  2. How does social media engagement influence these patterns?

  3. What are the broader implications of these changes for Nigerian language norms?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the transformative impact of social media on Nigerian morphosyntax, offering insights for linguists, educators, and digital communication experts. The findings will help inform strategies to address language change in the digital era and enhance our understanding of online discourse dynamics. The research contributes to the broader discourse on language evolution in digital contexts, emphasizing the need for adaptive language policies (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian online debates and does not extend to other social media contexts or offline communication.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Morphosyntax: The combined study of word formation and sentence structure.

  2. Social Media Engagement: Interaction and participation in online communication platforms.

  3. Online Debates: Digital discussions characterized by argumentative exchanges.
