Background of the Study
Traditional song lyrics are a cornerstone of Nigerian folk narratives, preserving cultural heritage and oral history. This study evaluates the morphological regularity present in these lyrics, focusing on the systematic formation of words and affixes in indigenous languages. Nigerian folk songs, passed down through generations, exhibit consistent morphological patterns that reflect cultural values, social norms, and historical experiences. The regularity in morphological structures contributes to the memorability and rhythmic quality of the songs, aiding in the effective transmission of cultural knowledge (Ibrahim, 2023). Researchers have noted that the use of recurring prefixes, suffixes, and infixes in folk narratives reinforces linguistic identity and aids in the retention of oral traditions (Chinwe, 2024). By analyzing a diverse corpus of traditional song lyrics, the study aims to identify patterns of morphological regularity and explore their role in enhancing narrative coherence and audience engagement. The integration of linguistic analysis with cultural studies provides a comprehensive perspective on how form and function coalesce in Nigerian folk narratives, thus contributing to both theoretical linguistics and practical preservation efforts (Oluwaseun, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized cultural significance of Nigerian folk narratives, there is insufficient research on the morphological regularity embedded within traditional song lyrics. Current studies often focus on thematic elements and performance aspects rather than systematic word formation. This oversight creates a gap in understanding how morphological patterns contribute to the structure and memorability of these narratives. The absence of detailed morphological analysis may impede efforts to document and preserve traditional linguistic practices accurately. Addressing this issue is essential for comprehending how consistent morphological features facilitate the oral transmission of cultural values and historical information. This study seeks to fill this gap by providing a detailed evaluation of the morphological regularity in traditional song lyrics, thereby enriching both linguistic theory and cultural preservation initiatives (Ibrahim, 2023; Chinwe, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify key morphological patterns in traditional Nigerian song lyrics.

  2. To assess the role of morphological regularity in narrative coherence.

  3. To explore the cultural significance of these patterns in folk narratives.

Research Questions

  1. What morphological structures are most prevalent in Nigerian folk song lyrics?

  2. How do these structures enhance the narrative quality of the songs?

  3. What cultural functions do these morphological patterns serve?

Significance of the Study
This study highlights the importance of morphological regularity in preserving and transmitting Nigerian cultural heritage. The findings will benefit linguists, cultural historians, and educators by providing insights into the structural features that enhance oral narratives. By emphasizing the role of systematic word formation, the research supports the documentation and preservation of indigenous linguistic practices, contributing to both academic scholarship and cultural sustainability (Chinwe, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to evaluating morphological regularity in traditional Nigerian folk song lyrics and does not include other forms of folk narratives.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Morphology: The study of the structure and formation of words.

  2. Regularity: Consistency in linguistic patterns.

  3. Folk Narratives: Traditional stories and songs passed down orally.
