Background of the Study
Oral traditions remain a vibrant medium for cultural expression and knowledge transmission in many African societies. Hausa, as a predominant language in northern Nigeria, is distinguished by its syntactic structure, which is integral to the art of traditional storytelling. This study examines the role of Hausa syntax in shaping oral narratives within northern communities. Traditional storytelling not only entertains but also serves as a repository of history, morality, and communal values. The syntactic patterns of Hausa, including sentence structure, word order, and the use of proverbs, are essential in conveying layered meanings and cultural nuances (Abubakar, 2023). Recent scholarly attention has focused on how indigenous syntactic structures support the preservation of oral heritage and contribute to a community’s identity (Bello, 2024). Through detailed analysis of storytelling sessions, this research aims to explore the interplay between syntax and narrative effectiveness. The study also considers the evolution of Hausa syntax in response to modern influences, documenting both continuities and changes in oral traditions. By integrating linguistic analysis with ethnographic insights, the research will provide a comprehensive understanding of how syntactic choices enhance the emotional and cultural impact of traditional storytelling (Umar, 2025). This interdisciplinary approach highlights the significance of maintaining syntactic integrity as a cornerstone of cultural preservation and intergenerational knowledge transfer.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural importance of traditional storytelling, there exists a paucity of research focused on the syntactic elements that underlie Hausa oral narratives. Current literature predominantly addresses the thematic and performative aspects of storytelling, while the structural features of Hausa syntax remain underexplored. This gap is particularly evident in studies aiming to understand how specific syntactic constructions affect the clarity, rhythm, and overall impact of the narrative. The lack of systematic evaluation of Hausa syntax in traditional contexts may contribute to the erosion of nuanced linguistic practices over time. Addressing this problem is critical to preserving the richness of Hausa oral traditions and understanding the linguistic mechanisms that sustain cultural identity (Bello, 2024; Umar, 2025).

Additionally, the research will provide recommendations for maintaining syntactic traditions in the face of modern linguistic influences, thereby supporting cultural sustainability (Abubakar, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The research is limited to the analysis of Hausa syntactic structures in traditional storytelling within selected northern communities and does not include written narratives or other performance arts.
