Background of the Study
Expanding branch accessibility is a key strategy for increasing market coverage and promoting financial inclusion. Union Bank of Nigeria has strategically focused on expanding its branch network to tap into new market segments, particularly in underserved rural and semi-urban areas. The bank’s initiatives include the establishment of new branches, deployment of mobile banking units, and integration of digital platforms to complement physical outlets (Oluwale, 2023). This multi-pronged approach not only enhances customer access to financial services but also stimulates local economic development by providing essential banking products. By tailoring services to meet the unique needs of different market segments, Union Bank aims to boost customer acquisition and retention, ultimately enhancing its market share. Digital integration facilitates real-time monitoring of branch performance and customer engagement, thereby enabling continuous improvement in service delivery. However, operational challenges such as high setup costs, infrastructural limitations, and regulatory constraints continue to impede seamless expansion.

Statement of the Problem
Despite concerted efforts to expand its branch network, Union Bank of Nigeria still faces significant challenges in reaching new market segments. High operational costs and logistical difficulties in setting up branches in remote areas have resulted in uneven service delivery (Ibrahim, 2024). Infrastructural deficiencies and regional regulatory constraints further complicate the expansion process, leading to variable customer experiences across different locations. Additionally, the digital divide in some markets limits the effectiveness of complementary digital banking solutions, thereby reducing the overall impact on market coverage. These challenges restrict the bank’s ability to fully leverage its branch expansion strategy, limiting its potential to drive financial inclusion and market growth.

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the impact of branch accessibility improvements on reaching new market segments at Union Bank of Nigeria.
  • To identify operational and infrastructural challenges in branch expansion.
  • To recommend strategies for optimizing branch network growth and market penetration.

Research Questions

  • How does expanding branch accessibility affect market reach in new segments at Union Bank of Nigeria?
  • What operational and infrastructural challenges hinder branch expansion?
  • Which strategies can enhance the effectiveness of branch network growth?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₁: Expanded branch accessibility significantly increases market reach.
  • H₂: High operational costs and infrastructural challenges negatively impact expansion.
  • H₃: Tailored regional strategies enhance market penetration and financial inclusion.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on Union Bank of Nigeria’s branch expansion initiatives over the past three years, utilizing market penetration data, operational reports, and interviews with branch managers. Limitations include regional disparities and regulatory variations.
