Background Of The Study
As an academic discipline, home economics is always developing and adapting to a world where the rate of change is accelerating. Currently, practitioners are reorienting home economics to better address contemporary concerns and assure its continued relevance in the new century. Home economics is a unique topic since it integrates curriculum from all other subjects and applies it to the household.
According to Osifeso, Chigbu, and Aladewolu (2010), home economics is an art since it incorporates abilities based on tradition and intangible and undefinable traits, such as aesthetics, taste, and ethics. It is also a science since it includes the application of scientifically derived information and truth. Home economics does not seek to teach subjects such as philosophy, mathematics, physics, art, music, or religion, but it does strive to integrate and use these subjects in the everyday practice of homemaking. Consequently, it seeks to contribute to the harmonious and balanced physical, cognitive, and effective development of each student, regardless of their gender or ethnic background, so that they may become well-rounded, creative, responsible, and contributing members of society. Among its primary subjects are meal management, food and drinks, dietetics, food research and development, food hygiene, food and nutrition, home management, clothes and textiles, laundry, and interior and exterior décor.
Home economics is a subject that focuses on the management of the home and family members, ensuring that they are well-fed with nutritionally balanced and hygienically prepared food, as well as well-dressed and hygienically maintained. While practically all activity takes place in the hospitality industry, including hotels. The primary objective of the hospitality industry is to provide a home away from home for guests, as well as to ensure that they are well-fed, well-rested, and that their interior and outside are attractive. Therefore, the hospitality industry should be regarded as a wide subject that includes housing, food and industry service, event organizing, travel and tourism, hotels, restaurants, and bars.
The hospitality industry focuses on customer happiness, service quality, and the economics of the industry. Given the aforementioned facts, it seems that a home economics graduate may be hired in the hospitality industry with little training due to the skills they have gained.
Lagos State is a megacity teeming with tourists and several hospitality industries, like victory hotel, Eko hotel, Airways, and Sheraton hotel, among others, where home economics graduates might find industry. This research investigates the employability of home economics graduates in the hospitality industry in Lagos State..
