Background of the Study

Pre-hospital emergency care is essential for saving lives in the critical period before patients are transported to a hospital. In rural communities, such as those in Kebbi State, the availability of healthcare facilities and trained professionals is often limited, making nurses essential in providing immediate care to individuals who experience accidents, medical emergencies, or sudden health crises (Abdullahi & Musa, 2024). Nurses who work in rural areas often face unique challenges, such as a lack of medical supplies, long distances to healthcare facilities, and limited access to advanced medical technologies. Despite these obstacles, nurses in rural areas play a crucial role in delivering emergency care that can significantly impact patient survival and outcomes.

The involvement of nurses in pre-hospital emergency care includes administering first aid, stabilizing patients, and ensuring timely transport to medical facilities. However, the specific roles of nurses in these settings, particularly in rural communities, have not been fully explored. This study aims to investigate the role of nurses in providing pre-hospital emergency care in rural Kebbi communities and to assess how their interventions influence patient outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

In rural areas of Kebbi State, the lack of accessible healthcare infrastructure, limited training, and a shortage of resources pose significant barriers to effective pre-hospital emergency care. While nurses are often the first point of contact for individuals experiencing emergencies, their ability to provide optimal care is compromised by the lack of training and necessary equipment (Musa & Bello, 2023). Understanding the roles and challenges of nurses in pre-hospital emergency care in rural settings is crucial to improving health outcomes and enhancing emergency care services.

Objectives of the Study

1. To investigate the role of nurses in pre-hospital emergency care in rural communities of Kebbi State.

2. To assess the impact of nurse-led pre-hospital emergency interventions on patient outcomes in rural Kebbi.

3. To recommend strategies to enhance the effectiveness of nurse-led pre-hospital emergency care in rural communities.

Research Questions

1. What role do nurses play in providing pre-hospital emergency care in rural Kebbi communities?

2. How do nurse-led pre-hospital interventions affect patient outcomes in rural Kebbi?

3. What strategies can improve the effectiveness of nurses in providing pre-hospital emergency care in rural areas?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses play a critical role in providing pre-hospital emergency care in rural communities of Kebbi State.

2. Nurse-led pre-hospital interventions significantly improve patient outcomes in rural Kebbi.

3. Improving training and access to resources will enhance the effectiveness of nurses in providing pre-hospital emergency care in rural areas.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the roles of nurses in pre-hospital emergency care within rural communities of Kebbi State. It will not include urban areas or other healthcare workers involved in emergency care. Limitations include challenges in accessing rural communities and potential bias in self-reported data from nurses.

Definitions of Terms

• Pre-Hospital Emergency Care: Medical care provided to patients before they arrive at a healthcare facility, often in the field or in transit.

• Nurse-Led Interventions: Emergency care actions and interventions carried out by nurses, including first aid and stabilizing treatments.

• Patient Outcomes: The results of medical care, such as survival rates, recovery speed, and complication rates.
