Background of the Study

Mass casualty incidents (MCIs) are events that overwhelm the healthcare system due to the number and severity of injuries. Nurses play a critical role in responding to MCIs, requiring adequate preparedness to manage such emergencies effectively. Assessing the readiness of nurses at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) in Zaria is essential to ensure optimal response during MCIs.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the increasing occurrence of MCIs globally, there is limited information regarding the preparedness of nurses at ABUTH to handle such events. Evaluating their readiness is crucial for identifying gaps and implementing necessary training programs.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current level of preparedness among nurses at ABUTH for MCIs.
  2. To identify factors influencing nurses' readiness for MCIs.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing training programs related to MCI preparedness.
  4. To recommend strategies to enhance nurses' readiness for MCIs.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current level of preparedness among nurses at ABUTH for MCIs?
  2. What factors influence nurses' readiness for MCIs?
  3. How effective are the existing training programs on MCI preparedness?
  4. What strategies can be implemented to improve nurses' readiness for MCIs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at ABUTH have a moderate level of preparedness for MCIs.
  2. Factors such as training, experience, and resource availability significantly influence nurses' readiness for MCIs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nurses employed at ABUTH, assessing their preparedness for MCIs. It examines factors influencing readiness and evaluates existing training programs. Limitations may include self-reported data, which could be subject to bias, and the study's confinement to a single institution, affecting the generalizability of the findings.

Definitions of Terms

  • Mass Casualty Incident (MCI): An event resulting in a large number of casualties that overwhelms the local healthcare system.
  • Preparedness: The state of being ready and able to respond effectively to emergencies, including having the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources.
