Background of the Study

End-of-life (EOL) care is a critical component of palliative care, focusing on the care of patients in the final stages of life. It involves managing physical symptoms, providing emotional and psychological support, and helping families cope with the process of dying (WHO, 2024). Nurses play a fundamental role in EOL care, offering hands-on support to patients and families, administering comfort measures, and ensuring that the patient's wishes are respected (Afolabi & Musa, 2023).

However, providing EOL care presents numerous challenges for nurses, including emotional stress, ethical dilemmas, cultural and religious concerns, and a lack of appropriate resources and training (Eze & Bello, 2024). At Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) in Zaria, nurses encounter various barriers in delivering quality EOL care, but the specific challenges they face have not been systematically explored.

This study aims to evaluate the challenges faced by nurses in providing EOL care at ABUTH Zaria, with the goal of identifying strategies to overcome these challenges and improve the quality of care for terminally ill patients.

Statement of the Problem

While end-of-life care is crucial for ensuring comfort and dignity in the final stages of life, nurses at ABUTH Zaria face several obstacles in providing this care effectively. These challenges include inadequate training in palliative care, limited resources, and cultural barriers surrounding death and dying (Musa & Ibrahim, 2023). Without a clear understanding of these challenges, it is difficult to develop targeted interventions that support nurses and improve EOL care delivery.

This study seeks to identify the challenges faced by nurses in providing end-of-life care at ABUTH Zaria and recommend strategies for enhancing EOL care services.

Objectives of the Study

1. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in providing end-of-life care at ABUTH Zaria.

2. To evaluate the impact of these challenges on the quality of care provided to terminally ill patients.

3. To propose strategies for overcoming the challenges faced by nurses in delivering end-of-life care.

Research Questions

1. What challenges do nurses face in providing end-of-life care at ABUTH Zaria?

2. How do these challenges impact the quality of end-of-life care provided to patients?

3. What strategies can be implemented to overcome these challenges and improve the delivery of end-of-life care?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses face significant challenges in providing effective end-of-life care at ABUTH Zaria.

2. The challenges faced by nurses negatively impact the quality of end-of-life care provided to patients.

3. Implementing appropriate training and resource allocation will improve the quality of end-of-life care provided by nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the challenges faced by nurses in providing end-of-life care at ABUTH Zaria. It will not include other healthcare providers or family members' roles in EOL care. Limitations may include differences in nurses' experiences and the subjective nature of identifying challenges in such a sensitive area.
