Background of the Study

Emergency medical equipment plays a crucial role in ensuring timely and effective patient care in critical situations. The availability and proper utilization of such equipment are essential in managing life-threatening conditions, stabilizing patients, and preventing complications. Nurses, who are at the frontline of emergency care, rely on these tools to provide immediate interventions.

Globally, research has shown that inadequate availability and underutilization of emergency medical equipment can significantly impact patient outcomes. A study on the utilization of emergency equipment in Nigerian healthcare facilities highlighted the challenges of equipment shortages, poor maintenance, and inadequate training among healthcare professionals. At Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, the extent to which nurses have access to and effectively utilize emergency medical equipment remains uncertain. Identifying gaps in equipment availability and usage can inform policy recommendations to enhance emergency care services.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role of emergency medical equipment, many hospitals in Nigeria face significant shortages and underutilization, affecting patient care quality. Inadequate access to essential tools such as defibrillators, oxygen supply, and suction devices can delay life-saving interventions and increase mortality rates in emergency situations.

At Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, there is limited empirical data on the availability of emergency equipment and how effectively nurses utilize it. Challenges such as insufficient training, maintenance issues, and administrative constraints may hinder optimal use. This study seeks to evaluate the availability and utilization of emergency medical equipment by nurses to identify areas needing improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the availability of essential emergency medical equipment at Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi.
  2. To evaluate the extent of utilization of available emergency medical equipment by nurses.
  3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in accessing and using emergency medical equipment effectively.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current status of emergency medical equipment availability at Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi?
  2. How frequently and effectively do nurses utilize available emergency medical equipment?
  3. What factors hinder the optimal utilization of emergency medical equipment by nurses?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is an inadequate availability of emergency medical equipment at Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi.
  2. The utilization of available emergency medical equipment by nurses is suboptimal.
  3. Factors such as lack of training, poor maintenance, and administrative constraints hinder effective utilization of emergency medical equipment.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the availability and utilization of emergency medical equipment by nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi. It assesses the adequacy of available equipment and examines barriers to effective utilization. The study is limited by its reliance on hospital records and self-reported data from nurses, which may introduce biases. Additionally, findings may not be applicable to other healthcare institutions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Emergency Medical Equipment: Devices and tools used in emergency care to stabilize and treat critically ill patients.
  • Utilization: The extent to which nurses effectively use available emergency medical equipment in patient care.
