Background of the Study

Obesity is a major global health problem, with significant implications for public health and healthcare systems. It is a leading risk factor for several chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). In Nigeria, obesity rates are on the rise due to urbanization, unhealthy dietary patterns, and physical inactivity (Bello et al., 2023).

Nurses have an essential role in obesity management through nutrition-focused interventions, including dietary counseling, weight management education, and support for behavior change (Adebayo & Musa, 2024). These interventions are critical in encouraging patients to adopt healthier lifestyles, achieve weight reduction, and reduce the risk of obesity-related comorbidities (Okonkwo et al., 2023). At Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto, nutrition-focused nursing interventions are being implemented to manage obesity, but the impact of these interventions on patient outcomes remains underexplored.

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition-focused nursing interventions in obesity management at Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto, assessing their impact on weight reduction and improvement in health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Obesity-related diseases are a growing concern in Nigeria, and efforts to address obesity through lifestyle interventions are crucial. However, managing obesity through nutritional counseling and behavior modification remains challenging due to limited resources, inadequate patient engagement, and lack of comprehensive obesity management programs (WHO, 2024). While nurses are integral to providing these interventions, their impact on long-term obesity management is not well documented at Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto. This study seeks to evaluate the role of nutrition-focused nursing interventions in improving obesity management outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of nutrition-focused nursing interventions in managing obesity at Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto.
  2. To evaluate the impact of these interventions on weight reduction and health improvement in obese patients.
  3. To identify factors that influence the success or failure of obesity management through nursing interventions.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are nutrition-focused nursing interventions in managing obesity at Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto?
  2. What is the impact of these interventions on weight reduction and improvement in obesity-related health outcomes?
  3. What factors influence the success of obesity management through nutrition-focused nursing interventions?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nutrition-focused nursing interventions significantly improve weight reduction among obese patients.
  2. Nurse-led interventions lead to improvements in obesity-related health outcomes.
  3. Factors such as patient motivation and nurse training affect the success of obesity management interventions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on obese patients at Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto, who have received nutrition-focused interventions. Limitations may include patient adherence to prescribed interventions and the short-term nature of the study, which may not capture long-term outcomes.

Definitions of Terms
