Background of the Study

Dementia is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by cognitive decline, memory loss, and impaired daily functioning. It poses a significant healthcare challenge worldwide, particularly in aging populations (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). In Nigeria, the prevalence of dementia is increasing, with many cases going undiagnosed or inadequately managed due to limited healthcare resources and social stigma (Bello et al., 2023).

Nurses play a critical role in dementia care by providing medical support, behavioral management, and caregiver education. Their knowledge and attitudes towards dementia significantly influence the quality of care provided (Adebayo & Musa, 2024). Studies indicate that inadequate training, negative perceptions, and lack of specialized dementia care facilities contribute to suboptimal care outcomes (Okonkwo et al., 2023).

At Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, there is limited data on nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward dementia care. This study aims to assess their level of understanding, identify gaps in training, and evaluate how their perceptions impact patient care.

Statement of the Problem

Dementia care in Nigeria remains inadequate due to a lack of awareness, insufficient training, and negative societal attitudes (WHO, 2024). Nurses are often the primary caregivers for dementia patients, yet many lack the specialized knowledge and skills required for effective management (Aliyu & Salisu, 2023).

At Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, anecdotal evidence suggests that dementia patients may not receive optimal care due to varying levels of nurse preparedness and differing attitudes towards the condition (Eze & Musa, 2024). Assessing nurses' knowledge and attitudes is crucial for improving dementia care and guiding targeted training programs.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess nurses’ knowledge of dementia care at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe.
  2. To evaluate nurses' attitudes toward dementia patients and how it affects care delivery.
  3. To identify barriers to effective dementia care among nurses.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nurses’ knowledge regarding dementia care?
  2. How do nurses’ attitudes impact the quality of dementia care provided?
  3. What barriers hinder effective dementia care among nurses?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses have adequate knowledge of dementia care.
  2. Nurses’ attitudes significantly influence the quality of dementia care provided.
  3. Limited training and resources negatively impact dementia care practices.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses providing dementia care at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe. Limitations may include self-reported biases, differences in training backgrounds, and limited access to dementia-specific care guidelines.
