Background of the Study
Nurses are integral to healthcare delivery, often working in environments that expose them to various safety risks, including physical assaults, verbal abuse, and exposure to infectious diseases. Effective hospital security measures are essential to mitigate these risks and ensure a safe working environment for nursing staff. In Nigeria, incidents of violence against healthcare workers have been reported, highlighting the need for robust security protocols. For instance, a study assessing knowledge and practice of standard precautions among nurses at Federal Medical Centre Gombe found that while nurses were aware of safety protocols, adherence was inconsistent, indicating potential gaps in security measures and training.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of nurses in patient care, their safety remains a concern at Federal Medical Centre Gombe. Reports of workplace violence and inadequate security measures have been noted, potentially compromising nurses' well-being and the quality of patient care. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of existing hospital security measures in safeguarding nurses and identify areas for improvement.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the current hospital security measures in place at Federal Medical Centre Gombe.
2. To evaluate nurses' perceptions of their safety within the hospital environment.
3. To identify challenges and barriers to effective implementation of security measures.
Research Questions
1. What security measures are currently implemented at Federal Medical Centre Gombe to protect nurses?
2. How do nurses perceive their safety in the hospital setting?
3. What challenges hinder the effective implementation of security measures for nurses?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: There is no significant relationship between hospital security measures and nurses' perceived safety at Federal Medical Centre Gombe.
2. H₀: Nurses' perceptions of safety are not significantly influenced by the implementation of security measures.
3. H₀: There are no significant barriers to the effective implementation of security measures for nurses.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on nurses employed at Federal Medical Centre Gombe, assessing their perceptions of safety and the effectiveness of security measures. It does not include other healthcare professionals or institutions. Limitations may include potential biases in self-reported data and the challenge of measuring subjective perceptions of safety.
