Background of the Study

Mobile health (mHealth) applications, which are smartphone-based tools for managing health information, improving patient care, and facilitating communication, have gained significant traction in recent years. These applications allow healthcare providers, including nurses, to access patient data, monitor health metrics, provide health education, and support decision-making (Ogunleye & Ibrahim, 2024).

In Nigeria, the adoption of mHealth applications among healthcare professionals is still in its early stages. However, studies suggest that nurses who are familiar with mobile technologies show a greater interest in adopting these tools to improve patient care (Bello et al., 2024). Despite the potential benefits, many nurses remain hesitant to use mobile health applications, citing concerns over privacy, technological barriers, and lack of training. At Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yola, it is essential to assess nurses' attitudes towards the use of these applications to determine how they perceive their usefulness and identify factors influencing adoption.

This study aims to evaluate nurses' attitudes towards mobile health applications at FMC Yola, examining the factors that encourage or discourage their use.

Statement of the Problem

The use of mobile health applications has the potential to significantly enhance nursing practice, improving efficiency, accuracy, and patient outcomes. However, many nurses may have reservations about integrating these tools into their daily routines. At FMC Yola, understanding nurses' attitudes towards mHealth applications is crucial for identifying barriers to adoption and creating strategies to encourage their use. If nurses are resistant to using these tools, it may limit the effectiveness of mHealth initiatives and prevent the hospital from realizing the full benefits of technological advancements in healthcare.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate nurses' attitudes towards the use of mobile health applications at FMC Yola.

2. To identify factors influencing nurses' adoption or resistance to using mobile health applications.

3. To explore the potential benefits and challenges nurses perceive regarding the use of mobile health applications in patient care.

Research Questions

1. What are nurses' attitudes towards the use of mobile health applications at FMC Yola?

2. What factors influence nurses' adoption or resistance to using mobile health applications?

3. What benefits and challenges do nurses perceive in using mobile health applications in patient care?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₀: Nurses have no significant positive or negative attitudes towards the use of mobile health applications at FMC Yola.

2. H₀: There are no significant factors influencing nurses' adoption or resistance to using mobile health applications.

3. H₀: Nurses perceive no significant benefits or challenges in using mobile health applications in patient care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nurses at FMC Yola and their attitudes towards mobile health applications. It does not include other healthcare professionals or other institutions. Limitations may include variability in nurses' access to technology and individual differences in comfort with mobile devices.

Definition of Terms

• Mobile Health Applications (mHealth):Smartphone applications designed to support health-related activities, such as patient monitoring, health education, and communication.

• Adoption: The process of integrating new technologies into regular practice.

• Nurses' Attitudes: The beliefs, feelings, and perceptions that nurses hold about the use of mobile health applications in patient care.
