Background of the Study

Nurse burnout is a critical issue in healthcare settings, particularly in hospitals with high patient volumes like State Specialist Hospital, Kano. Burnout is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment (Alade et al., 2023). This phenomenon occurs when nurses face excessive work demands, lack of support, and poor work-life balance. As a result, burnout can lead to decreased job satisfaction, higher turnover rates, and compromised patient care (Ogunrinde et al., 2024).

In Kano, nurses at State Specialist Hospital are often subjected to high patient-to-nurse ratios, long working hours, and limited resources, factors that increase the risk of burnout. The consequences of burnout are far-reaching, not only affecting the health and well-being of nurses but also impacting the quality of care delivered to patients. Nurses experiencing burnout are more likely to make errors, exhibit reduced empathy, and experience a decline in their clinical performance (Eze et al., 2024). This study aims to appraise burnout among nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano, and examine its impact on patient care.

Statement of the Problem

Burnout among nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano, is a growing concern, as it compromises both the health of the healthcare workers and the quality of patient care. Despite the significance of this issue, there is limited research on the causes of burnout and its specific impact on patient outcomes at the hospital. This study seeks to investigate the prevalence of burnout among nurses and its consequences for patient care at State Specialist Hospital.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of burnout among nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano.
  2. To examine the impact of nurse burnout on the quality of patient care.
  3. To recommend strategies for reducing burnout and improving patient care at the hospital.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of burnout among nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano?
  2. How does burnout affect the quality of patient care provided by nurses?
  3. What interventions can be implemented to reduce nurse burnout and improve patient care?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Burnout is prevalent among nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano, due to excessive workload and lack of support.
  2. Nurses experiencing burnout are more likely to provide suboptimal patient care.
  3. Reducing burnout through targeted interventions will improve both nurse well-being and patient care outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working at State Specialist Hospital, Kano, and the relationship between burnout and patient care outcomes. Limitations may include the use of self-reported data and the difficulty of measuring the direct impact of burnout on patient outcomes.
