Background of the Study

Cardiac rehabilitation is a structured program designed to improve the physical and psychological well-being of patients recovering from heart disease, particularly after events like heart attacks, surgeries, or procedures (American Heart Association, 2024). The program typically includes physical exercise, lifestyle education, counseling, and nutritional support. Nurses play a central role in leading cardiac rehabilitation programs by educating patients, providing emotional support, and ensuring adherence to treatment protocols.

At Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Makurdi, nurses are involved in implementing cardiac rehabilitation programs aimed at improving patient outcomes post-cardiac events. These programs have been shown to reduce mortality rates, enhance physical functioning, and improve quality of life for patients with heart conditions (Ajayi et al., 2023). However, the specific impact of nurse-led cardiac rehabilitation programs on patient outcomes at FMC, Makurdi, has not been comprehensively studied.

This study aims to assess the impact of cardiac rehabilitation programs led by nurses on patient outcomes at FMC, Makurdi. By evaluating the effectiveness of these programs, the study will provide insights into how nurse-led rehabilitation can improve recovery and prevent further complications in cardiac patients.

Statement of the Problem

Cardiac rehabilitation programs are known to improve outcomes for heart disease patients, but there is a lack of research on the specific effects of nurse-led rehabilitation programs on patient recovery at FMC, Makurdi. Many patients may not fully benefit from rehabilitation due to inadequate program structures or lack of follow-up care (Oluwaseun & Eze, 2023). Without a clear understanding of how nurse-led programs contribute to patient outcomes, it is difficult to optimize these interventions for better results.

This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led cardiac rehabilitation programs at FMC, Makurdi, to improve patient outcomes, including physical recovery, psychological well-being, and quality of life.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of nurse-led cardiac rehabilitation programs on patient recovery at FMC, Makurdi.
  2. To evaluate the impact of these programs on the physical, psychological, and social well-being of patients.
  3. To recommend improvements to enhance the success of cardiac rehabilitation programs at FMC, Makurdi.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are nurse-led cardiac rehabilitation programs in improving patient recovery at FMC, Makurdi?
  2. What are the physical, psychological, and social benefits of cardiac rehabilitation for patients?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation programs at FMC, Makurdi?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Patients who participate in nurse-led cardiac rehabilitation programs show improved physical recovery.
  2. Nurse-led cardiac rehabilitation programs positively impact the psychological well-being of patients.
  3. Enhancing nurse-led cardiac rehabilitation programs will improve overall patient outcomes at FMC, Makurdi.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on cardiac patients at FMC, Makurdi, who have participated in nurse-led rehabilitation programs. Limitations may include variations in individual patient health conditions and the lack of long-term follow-up data on patient outcomes.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Cardiac Rehabilitation – A program of physical exercise, counseling, and education designed to improve the health of patients recovering from heart disease.
  2. Nurse-Led Programs – Healthcare programs designed and administered by nurses to manage patient care and improve health outcomes.
  3. Patient Outcomes – The physical, psychological, and social results of medical treatment and rehabilitation programs.
