Background of the Study

Telemedicine has emerged as a vital tool in modern healthcare, enhancing accessibility to medical services, especially in remote and underserved areas. The integration of telemedicine into nursing care delivery has been associated with improved patient monitoring, timely interventions, and increased efficiency in healthcare services (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). By leveraging digital platforms, nurses can provide virtual consultations, monitor patients remotely, and facilitate communication between patients and physicians.

Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria, has been exploring the adoption of telemedicine to improve healthcare access and optimize resource utilization. However, challenges such as inadequate technological infrastructure, limited training, and concerns over patient confidentiality have affected the seamless integration of telemedicine into nursing practice (Olawale & Musa, 2023). Despite its potential benefits, the extent to which telemedicine has influenced nursing care delivery at ABUTH remains unclear.

As telemedicine continues to evolve, assessing its impact on nursing care delivery is crucial to understanding its effectiveness in improving patient outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the effect of telemedicine adoption on nursing care delivery at ABUTH, Zaria, identify existing barriers, and propose strategies for enhancing telemedicine use in nursing practice.

Statement of the Problem

The increasing demand for healthcare services, coupled with the shortage of healthcare professionals in Nigeria, has made telemedicine an essential component of modern healthcare delivery. Despite its potential benefits, many nurses at ABUTH, Zaria, face challenges in adapting to telemedicine due to limited training, resistance to change, and technical difficulties (Bello et al., 2024).

The effectiveness of telemedicine in improving nursing care delivery is still debated, with concerns regarding communication barriers, patient confidentiality, and the ability of nurses to provide quality care remotely (Okonkwo & Ibrahim, 2023). Without proper assessment, telemedicine adoption may fail to achieve its intended benefits in nursing practice. This study seeks to examine the impact of telemedicine on nursing care delivery at ABUTH, identify challenges faced by nurses, and recommend strategies for improving telemedicine integration.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of telemedicine adoption on nursing care delivery at ABUTH, Zaria.
  2. To identify challenges faced by nurses in utilizing telemedicine for patient care.
  3. To propose recommendations for improving telemedicine use in nursing practice.

Research Questions

  1. How has telemedicine adoption influenced nursing care delivery at ABUTH, Zaria?
  2. What challenges do nurses face in using telemedicine for patient care?
  3. What strategies can enhance the effectiveness of telemedicine in nursing practice?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The adoption of telemedicine significantly improves nursing care delivery at ABUTH, Zaria.
  2. Limited training and technological infrastructure hinder the effective use of telemedicine in nursing.
  3. Enhancing telemedicine training and infrastructure will improve nursing care delivery.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the effect of telemedicine adoption on nursing care delivery at ABUTH, Zaria. Limitations may include variations in telemedicine adoption across hospital units and reluctance of some nurses to adapt to digital healthcare delivery.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Telemedicine – The use of digital communication technology to provide healthcare services remotely.
  2. Nursing Care Delivery – The methods and practices used by nurses to provide healthcare services to patients.
  3. Technological Infrastructure – The hardware and software systems required for implementing telemedicine services.
