Background of the Study
Adolescence is a critical period in human development, marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes. Among these changes is the onset of reproductive maturity, which brings the need for accurate and comprehensive reproductive health education. However, many adolescents lack adequate information about reproductive health, leading to increased rates of unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and other reproductive health challenges (WHO, 2023). Nurses play a crucial role in providing health education, yet their involvement in adolescent reproductive health education remains limited in many healthcare settings, particularly in Kano, Nigeria.
In Nigeria, adolescent reproductive health (ARH) issues are of great concern due to sociocultural barriers, religious restrictions, and limited access to appropriate information (UNFPA, 2024). While government policies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have made efforts to address these challenges, the role of nurses in adolescent reproductive health education is often underutilized. As frontline healthcare providers, nurses have a unique opportunity to educate adolescents about reproductive health, guiding them toward informed and responsible decision-making. Studies have shown that nurse-led reproductive health education improves adolescents' knowledge and encourages healthy sexual behaviors (Adepoju et al., 2023).
Despite the advantages of nurse-led education, various challenges hinder its effectiveness, including inadequate training, cultural resistance, and structural barriers within healthcare facilities (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). In Kano, where sociocultural norms strongly influence reproductive health discussions, the role of nurses in adolescent reproductive health education needs to be critically examined. The effectiveness of their involvement in shaping adolescents' reproductive health choices, awareness, and attitudes toward sexual health remains an area that requires further empirical investigation.
Statement of the Problem
Despite growing awareness of the importance of reproductive health education for adolescents, there remains a gap in the provision of adequate, accessible, and youth-friendly information. The lack of structured nurse-led adolescent reproductive health education programs has contributed to high rates of early pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and sexually transmitted infections in Kano (Nwankwo & Ibrahim, 2024). Adolescents often rely on peers, social media, and informal sources for reproductive health information, which may be misleading or incomplete.
Nurses, as primary healthcare providers, have the potential to bridge this gap by delivering accurate and culturally sensitive reproductive health education. However, their involvement in adolescent reproductive health education is often restricted due to factors such as limited training, conservative societal norms, and institutional constraints (Usman & Okonkwo, 2025). Without adequate support and recognition, the potential impact of nurses on adolescent reproductive health outcomes remains underutilized.
This study seeks to examine the extent to which nurses are involved in adolescent reproductive health education in State Specialist Hospital, Kano, and evaluate the effectiveness of their interventions. Understanding the role of nurses in this context is critical in developing strategies to enhance reproductive health education, reduce adolescent health risks, and promote overall well-being.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of nurses’ involvement in adolescent reproductive health education at State Specialist Hospital, Kano.
2. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led reproductive health education on adolescent knowledge, attitudes, and practices.
3. To identify the challenges and barriers limiting nurses’ involvement in adolescent reproductive health education.
Research Questions
1. What is the extent of nurses' involvement in adolescent reproductive health education at State Specialist Hospital, Kano?
2. How does nurse-led reproductive health education influence adolescents' knowledge, attitudes, and practices?
3. What are the key challenges preventing nurses from effectively engaging in adolescent reproductive health education?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: Nurses' involvement in adolescent reproductive health education has no significant impact on adolescent reproductive health knowledge.
2. H₀: There is no significant relationship between nurse-led reproductive health education and adolescent sexual behavior.
3. H₀: Sociocultural and institutional factors do not significantly affect nurses’ participation in adolescent reproductive health education.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the role of nurses in adolescent reproductive health education at the State Specialist Hospital, Kano. It will assess their level of involvement, the effectiveness of their educational efforts, and the barriers they encounter. The study is limited to adolescents who access reproductive health services at the hospital and does not extend to private healthcare facilities or community-based programs. Potential limitations include respondent bias, cultural sensitivities affecting data collection, and challenges in obtaining comprehensive data due to societal stigmatization of reproductive health discussions.

• Adolescent Reproductive Health: The physical, emotional, and social well-being of individuals aged 10-19 concerning their reproductive system and health.
• Nurse-Led Education: Health education programs designed and delivered by nurses to promote health awareness.
• Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs):Infections spread through sexual contact, including HIV, gonorrhea, and chlamydia.
• Unintended Pregnancy: A pregnancy that is either mistimed or unwanted at the time of conception.
