Background of the Study
Suicide is a major public health issue, with increasing rates globally (WHO, 2024). Nurses are often the first point of contact for individuals at risk of suicide, making their knowledge and attitudes toward suicide prevention critical in reducing suicide rates (Patel et al., 2023). Effective suicide prevention requires proper risk assessment, early intervention, and compassionate care, yet studies indicate that many nurses lack adequate training in suicide prevention (Adebola & Musa, 2023).
At Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, suicide cases have been reported among patients with mental health conditions, yet the extent of nurses' knowledge and preparedness to handle suicidal individuals remains unclear (Okeke et al., 2024). Evaluating nurses’ knowledge and attitudes toward suicide prevention is essential for enhancing mental health care.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing prevalence of suicide, many healthcare professionals, including nurses, are not adequately trained in suicide prevention strategies (James & Uche, 2023). At FMC Jalingo, it is unclear whether nurses have the necessary skills and knowledge to identify and manage suicidal patients.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess nurses' knowledge of suicide prevention strategies.
2. To evaluate nurses' attitudes toward patients at risk of suicide.
3. To identify gaps in training and recommend improvements.
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses with higher training in mental health have better knowledge of suicide prevention.
2. Negative attitudes towards suicide reduce the effectiveness of prevention strategies.
3. Structured training programs improve nurses' preparedness for suicide prevention.
