Gastrointestinal (GI) infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in children, particularly in developing countries. In Nigeria, diarrheal diseases, which are often the result of infections caused by viruses, bacteria, and parasites, remain a leading cause of child mortality (Ali et al., 2024). Children are particularly vulnerable to GI infections due to their underdeveloped immune systems, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene practices (Ogunyemi et al., 2023). The prevention of these infections involves a combination of interventions such as vaccination, proper sanitation, hygiene practices, and appropriate treatment when infections occur.
Nurses play a pivotal role in preventing gastrointestinal infections by educating caregivers on proper hygiene, providing immunization information, and encouraging behaviors such as handwashing, safe food practices, and proper disposal of waste (Muhammad et al., 2024). Despite the importance of these interventions, there is limited research on the specific role of nurses in preventing GI infections in children within the context of Katsina State’s healthcare system. This study seeks to assess how nurses contribute to the prevention of GI infections in children at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
Gastrointestinal infections continue to pose a significant threat to children’s health in Nigeria, particularly in regions like Katsina State. While nurses have a crucial role in prevention through education and health promotion, there is limited evidence on how effectively these interventions are implemented in pediatric care settings. Understanding the role of nurses in preventing GI infections and the challenges they face is vital for improving child health outcomes in the region.
This study will focus on nurses working in pediatric wards at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State, and will examine their role in preventing GI infections. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining accurate data on the incidence of GI infections and variations in the availability of resources for infection prevention.
