Background of the Study

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are common bacterial infections that affect the urinary system, causing symptoms such as frequent urination, burning sensation during urination, and lower abdominal pain (Ibrahim et al., 2023). UTIs are particularly prevalent in women but also affect men, especially in older age groups. Nurses play a vital role in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of UTIs, from educating patients on proper hygiene to administering antibiotics and monitoring patient progress (Dantani et al., 2024). Despite the availability of treatments, the prevalence of UTIs remains high, and the proper management of these infections is essential to prevent complications like kidney damage and sepsis.

In Katsina State, where healthcare infrastructure may face challenges such as insufficient training and resources, it is crucial to assess nurses' knowledge and practices in managing UTIs. Inadequate knowledge or poor practice in managing UTIs can lead to delayed diagnosis, improper treatment, and unnecessary complications (Ahmed et al., 2024). This study aims to evaluate the level of knowledge and the clinical practices of nurses in Katsina State hospitals regarding UTI management, with a focus on prevention, early detection, and effective treatment.

Statement of the Problem

Urinary Tract Infections continue to be a leading cause of morbidity in many healthcare settings, and improper management can lead to severe complications. Nurses' knowledge and practices in preventing and managing UTIs are crucial to patient outcomes. In Katsina State hospitals, there is a lack of comprehensive data on the level of knowledge and adherence to best practices in UTI management. This study seeks to appraise the understanding of nurses regarding UTI management and identify gaps in practice that could be contributing to high UTI prevalence and complications.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess nurses' knowledge of urinary tract infection (UTI) management in Katsina State hospitals.
  2. To evaluate nurses’ adherence to best practices in UTI prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
  3. To identify gaps in knowledge and practice that may lead to suboptimal management of UTIs in Katsina State hospitals.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of nurses regarding urinary tract infection management in Katsina State hospitals?
  2. How closely do nurses adhere to best practices in preventing, diagnosing, and treating UTIs in Katsina State hospitals?
  3. What are the factors influencing nurses' practices in UTI management in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses' level of knowledge about UTI management is positively correlated with better patient outcomes.
  2. Adherence to best practices in UTI management significantly reduces the prevalence of complications in UTI patients.
  3. There are significant gaps in knowledge and practice among nurses in Katsina State regarding UTI management.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in Katsina State hospitals and will assess their knowledge and practices related to UTI management. Limitations may include the variability in training and resources available to nurses across different hospitals.

Definitions of Terms

  • Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): An infection in any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, bladder, or urethra.
  • Best Practices: Evidence-based methods and guidelines that are recommended for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of specific conditions.
  • Nurse-Led Practice: Clinical practices that are initiated and carried out by nurses, including patient assessment, treatment administration, and patient education.
