Background of the Study

Palliative care is a specialized medical approach that focuses on providing relief from the symptoms and suffering of patients with serious, life-limiting illnesses such as terminal cancer (WHO, 2024). Nurses play a vital role in palliative care, offering physical comfort, emotional support, and guidance to both patients and their families (Bello & Musa, 2024). In the context of terminal cancer, palliative care becomes essential for improving the quality of life during the final stages of illness, emphasizing pain management, symptom control, and emotional and psychological support (Oladele et al., 2024).

In Borno State, where healthcare resources are often stretched, and cancer care services are limited, the role of nurses in providing comprehensive palliative care is even more crucial (Ibrahim & Hassan, 2024). However, there are significant challenges to the effective implementation of palliative care, including inadequate training, emotional distress, and lack of proper infrastructure (Muhammad et al., 2024). Nurses may also face personal and professional difficulties in managing terminal cancer patients due to the emotional burden of dealing with death and dying (Ogunleye et al., 2024).

This study aims to examine the role of nurses in providing palliative care for terminal cancer patients at Borno State Teaching Hospital, highlighting their contributions, challenges, and the impact of their care on patient quality of life.

Statement of the Problem

Terminal cancer is a leading cause of death in many parts of Nigeria, including Borno State. While palliative care is crucial for managing the symptoms of terminal cancer, nurses often lack specialized training in this area, which can hinder the quality of care provided (Adepoju et al., 2024). This is compounded by emotional and psychological challenges, inadequate resources, and limited support from multidisciplinary teams (Bello & Musa, 2024). The role of nurses in the palliative care of terminal cancer patients is not well understood, and this study seeks to address this gap by exploring their contributions and challenges in Borno State Teaching Hospital.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of nurses in palliative care for terminal cancer patients in Borno State Teaching Hospital.
  2. To identify the challenges nurses face in providing palliative care to terminal cancer patients.
  3. To evaluate the impact of nursing interventions on the quality of life of terminal cancer patients.

Research Questions

  1. What role do nurses play in providing palliative care for terminal cancer patients in Borno State Teaching Hospital?
  2. What challenges do nurses face in delivering effective palliative care to terminal cancer patients?
  3. How do nursing interventions impact the quality of life of terminal cancer patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses significantly contribute to the palliative care of terminal cancer patients in Borno State Teaching Hospital.
  2. Inadequate training, emotional distress, and limited resources are major challenges faced by nurses in providing palliative care.
  3. Nursing interventions improve the quality of life of terminal cancer patients in Borno State Teaching Hospital.

Definitions of Terms

  • Palliative Care: Medical care that focuses on providing relief from symptoms, pain, and stress associated with serious, life-limiting illnesses.
  • Terminal Cancer: Advanced stage of cancer where treatment options are limited, and focus shifts to managing symptoms and providing comfort.
