Background of the Study

The role of family support in healthcare is widely recognized as a crucial factor in patient recovery, particularly among elderly individuals who may suffer from chronic illnesses, mobility limitations, and cognitive decline (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Family involvement in the care of elderly patients has been linked to improved adherence to treatment, enhanced psychological well-being, and faster recovery from illness (Adepoju et al., 2024). In Nigeria, where cultural values emphasize family bonds, the presence of supportive family members can significantly influence health outcomes among older adults (Bello & Musa, 2024).

In Yobe State, where healthcare resources for geriatric patients are limited, family support may serve as a critical determinant of recovery. Studies have shown that elderly patients who receive emotional, physical, and financial support from their families tend to have better adherence to medical recommendations and improved overall well-being (Oladele & Yusuf, 2024). However, factors such as urbanization, economic constraints, and shifting societal norms may be weakening traditional family caregiving roles, thereby affecting elderly patients’ recovery rates (Ibrahim & Hassan, 2024).

This study aims to evaluate the impact of family support on the recovery of elderly patients in Yobe State healthcare facilities and explore how different types of family involvement contribute to patient outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized benefits of family support in elderly healthcare, there is limited research on how it influences patient recovery in Yobe State. Many elderly individuals in healthcare facilities face challenges such as social isolation, inadequate caregiving assistance, and financial constraints, which may hinder their recovery (Muhammad et al., 2024).

Additionally, the changing dynamics of family structures due to urban migration and economic hardship have led to a reduction in family caregiving roles, leaving many elderly patients dependent solely on healthcare providers (Ogunleye et al., 2024). This study seeks to explore the extent to which family support impacts recovery among elderly patients and identify the barriers to effective family involvement in healthcare.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of family support in the recovery of elderly patients in Yobe State healthcare facilities.
  2. To determine the types of family support (emotional, financial, and physical) that contribute most to patient recovery.
  3. To identify challenges that limit family involvement in elderly patient care.

Research Questions

  1. How does family support influence the recovery of elderly patients in Yobe State healthcare facilities?
  2. What types of family support have the most significant impact on elderly patients' recovery?
  3. What challenges hinder family involvement in elderly patient care?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Family support significantly enhances the recovery of elderly patients in Yobe State healthcare facilities.
  2. Emotional, financial, and physical support each play a distinct role in patient recovery.
  3. Socioeconomic factors and migration patterns limit family involvement in elderly patient care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly patients receiving care in selected healthcare facilities in Yobe State. Limitations may include variations in family structures and availability of healthcare records.

Definitions of Terms

  • Family Support: The emotional, financial, and physical assistance provided by family members to aid a patient’s recovery.
  • Elderly Patients: Individuals aged 60 years and above receiving healthcare services.
