Background of the Study
Sustainability practices in supply chain operations focus on integrating environmental, social, and economic considerations into the decision-making processes that govern the sourcing, production, and distribution of goods. Nestlé Nigeria, a leading food and beverage company, operates in Benue State, where it faces growing pressure to adopt sustainable supply chain practices in light of global environmental concerns and local community needs (Adeleke & Eze, 2024). Sustainable supply chain management aims to reduce the environmental footprint of supply chain activities, improve resource efficiency, and ensure that the company’s operations are socially responsible.
Nestlé has made significant strides in implementing sustainability practices, such as sourcing raw materials from responsible suppliers, reducing carbon emissions in production processes, and promoting ethical labor practices across its supply chain. Additionally, the company has focused on reducing waste, improving water management, and increasing energy efficiency in its operations. By adopting sustainable practices, Nestlé aims not only to meet regulatory requirements but also to enhance its brand reputation, attract environmentally conscious consumers, and improve long-term profitability.
This study evaluates the sustainability practices in Nestlé Nigeria’s supply chain operations, specifically focusing on their environmental, social, and economic impacts.
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to adopt sustainability practices, Nestlé Nigeria faces challenges related to supply chain inefficiencies, high operational costs, and limited access to sustainable raw materials in Benue State. While the company has made progress in reducing its environmental impact, there remain gaps in supply chain transparency, waste management, and resource optimization. These challenges may undermine the effectiveness of Nestlé’s sustainability efforts and affect its long-term operational success. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the impact of sustainability practices on supply chain operations at Nestlé Nigeria, Benue State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the environmental impact of sustainability practices in Nestlé Nigeria’s supply chain operations.
2. To assess the social and economic benefits of sustainability practices for Nestlé Nigeria in Benue State.
3. To identify the challenges Nestlé Nigeria faces in implementing sustainable supply chain practices and recommend solutions.
Research Questions
1. How do sustainability practices impact the environmental performance of Nestlé Nigeria’s supply chain operations?
2. What are the social and economic benefits of sustainability practices in Nestlé Nigeria’s supply chain?
3. What challenges does Nestlé Nigeria face in implementing sustainable supply chain practices?
Research Hypotheses
1. Sustainability practices do not significantly impact the environmental performance of Nestlé Nigeria’s supply chain operations.
2. Social and economic benefits of sustainability practices do not significantly enhance Nestlé Nigeria’s supply chain operations.
3. Challenges in implementing sustainability practices do not significantly affect Nestlé Nigeria’s supply chain performance.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the sustainability practices adopted in Nestlé Nigeria’s supply chain operations in Benue State. Data will be gathered through interviews with supply chain managers, surveys, and analysis of environmental and operational reports. Limitations include access to sensitive operational data and the challenge of measuring the long-term impact of sustainability initiatives.
