Background of the Study

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is a critical intervention for individuals who may have been exposed to HIV, reducing the likelihood of acquiring the virus if taken within 72 hours of exposure. Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, are essential in managing PEP for individuals at risk of HIV exposure. However, there is limited research on nurses' knowledge and practice regarding PEP in Nigeria, especially in Bauchi State, where HIV transmission rates are a public health concern.

This study aims to evaluate the knowledge and practices of nurses in Bauchi State healthcare facilities regarding HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), identifying gaps in knowledge and areas for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of PEP as an effective prevention method, there is evidence suggesting that healthcare workers, including nurses, may not fully understand or implement PEP guidelines. This could contribute to missed opportunities for preventing HIV transmission. This study will investigate nurses’ knowledge and adherence to PEP protocols in Bauchi State healthcare facilities.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess nurses' knowledge of HIV post-exposure prophylaxis in Bauchi State healthcare facilities.

  2. To evaluate the practice of nurses in administering and advising on PEP.

  3. To identify factors influencing nurses' knowledge and practice regarding PEP.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nurses’ knowledge about HIV post-exposure prophylaxis in Bauchi State healthcare facilities?

  2. To what extent do nurses adhere to PEP protocols in Bauchi State healthcare facilities?

  3. What factors influence nurses’ knowledge and practice in administering PEP?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Bauchi State healthcare facilities have inadequate knowledge of HIV post-exposure prophylaxis.

  2. Nurses in Bauchi State do not consistently adhere to PEP guidelines.

  3. Factors such as training, resources, and workload influence nurses’ practice in administering PEP.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in healthcare facilities in Bauchi State involved in HIV care and post-exposure prophylaxis. Limitations may include variation in PEP knowledge and practice across different healthcare settings.

Definitions of Terms

  • Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP): The use of antiretroviral medications to prevent HIV infection after potential exposure.

  • Knowledge and Practice: The level of understanding and the application of that knowledge in clinical settings regarding HIV prevention, specifically post-exposure prophylaxis.
